Have been enjoying most of the random editions repeated recently (especially the ones with John Peel), and I assume the two '85 editions being shown each Friday are because it's forty years ago. A bit disappointed the edition where We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)'s music video was on was a skipped edition (last Friday on one of these editions a clip was played during the Top 10 chart countdown, but the song was going down the chart).

I'm not too surprised that BBC Four are showing only random editions two weeks today, as there is normally a break inbetween the end of one year's editions from the nineties and the start of the next. However..there is also the possibility that we'll have to wait until next January for the next year from the late-nineties.

I have quite a few of these episodes now squirrled away on an external HD (i'm only collecting the 80's episodes and the odd 70's/90's episodes of interest); what is interesting is that at least two of the 80's episodes that have been shown twice over the last few years are diff lengths, both by about 4-5 mins, with the longer version the most recent; suggests a song or something was originally cut first time it was put up, but reinstated on the recent appearance, not had a look yet; only noticed when i downloaded the more recent version and found it i already had it, but with a different file size/length ...

United Kingdom Mid-eighties music-themed night on BBC Two

I wasn't sure whether to post this in here or in UK TV from the past. Airing on BBC Two next Saturday (14th June) is a night of music-themed programming about the year 1985:

8.10 pm - 10.30 pm: 40 Hits of 1985 at the BBC (new compilation programme)
10.30 pm - 11.30 pm: TOTP Big Hits: 1985 compilation programme
11.30 pm - 0.30 am: documentary TOTP: The Story of 1985.

Source: Sky TV listings and TV & Satellite Week (Saturday 14th to Friday 20th June, 2025).

Have set the first programme to record as it might have some TOTP performances from skipped editions.

The start of the disruption season. Due to coverage of the Glastonbury music festival in two weeks time, no late-nineties and random editions of TOTP on BBC Four two weeks on Friday. Shortly after that, this year's Proms season will be starting, so the show won't be on as much as normal until towards mid-September.

Airing on BBC Two tonight is a new music compilation programme of performances on the BBC in the year 1985 (two hour plus timeslot). In the description in the listings magazine Duran Duran are mentioned (I assume with A View to a Kill, but I don't think they appeared in the TOTP studio (the music video was shown instead). I do remember seeing on another programme a clip from an edition of Wogan where they performed A View to a Kill).

- the 7th July, 1977 edition (presented by Tony Blackburn), airing at 8.30 pm - 9 pm.

Found this out from the BBC website page for the repeats of the show earlier.

Note: No late-nineties editions being shown on Friday 4th July due to cricket highlights.

United Kingdom 40 Hits of 1985 at the BBC

The new feature-length music compilation programme last weekend was a real nostalgia boost (was just the tonic, like the new Hallmark film, last Sunday night). Out of the forty songs (the majority of which were TOTP studio performances, performances on chat show Wogan and some music videos), three of them were much later re-recordings:

Don't You (Forget About Me) by Simple Minds
Road to Nowhere by David Byrne (of Talking Heads)
Slave to Love by Bryan Ferry.

Highlights for me included:

Duran Duran (Wogan studio performance)
Foreigner (music video)
Billy Ocean (TOTP studio performance)
Strawberry Switchblade (TOTP studio performance).

Found this out from the BBC website page for the repeats of the show earlier.

Note: No late-nineties editions being shown two weeks on Friday.

Comment: The latter edition I hoped was going to be the edition I recorded but later lost after getting a new Sky box. The Police are on, but not with Roxanne (Can't Stand Losing You instead). No Beach Boys with Lady Lynda, but Judie Tzuke is on with the same song (can't remember who was at No.1 on the edition I recorded and lost, but The Tubeway Army were at No.1 on this edition with Are 'Friends' Electric?).

Looking forward especially to the second of the two random editions being shown again on BBC Four two weeks on Friday, the 23rd July, 1981 edition (because of Sheena Easton with For Your Eyes Only and The Specials with Ghost Town).

A random edition from the same year was shown on the channel a few weeks ago where the Bond title song was in the Top 40 music singles chart countdown.

The first of tonight's two random editions (a live edition) was originally shown on the BBC two days before the Live Aid concerts in London and Philadelphia (13th July, 1985).

It turns out the second random edition tonight was the edition that I lost as The Beach Boys were on with Lady Lynda (audio clip, danced to by Legs & Co.). Another song I liked from that period that was also on this edition was Silly Games by Janet Kay. A nice boost hearing Lady Lynda again, as well as Stay with Me Till Dawn by Judie Tzuke.
