Default Logic Behind What Movies Will Be Released in Blu-Ray

I find it rather puzzling that there are so many seemingly unworthwhile or strictly rental movies that are released in blu-ray while so many great and wonderful movies are not.

For example, as a lover of musicals, I would love to see The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Camelot, Oliver! ,to name a few, come out in blu-ray. Or how about Titanic, Pride and Prejudice (Keira), Sense and Sensibility, Notting Hill?

These are just a few of so many gems that are missing in the Blu-ray catalog.

What gives?

Because what might be unworthwhile or strictly rental to you might not be to someone else.

Most have to be remastered/cleaned up whatever. That costs studios $$$. Also, there are only so many places that press the discs so they have to be scheduled. Many directors want to be personally involved in the process and timing is not always that simple. I am sure there are many many more factors but I was just hittng on a few.

Logic behind Blu-ray releases? Simple, one word:
Money

Blu-rays are released by companies and they need to make a profit. So they release blu-rays in such an order as to maximize their profit.

relating back to the age of the "dvd"...

There are limited # of facilities that can make BD's, right? Was this the reason for delays between box office release's and their subsequent "dvd" release back in the day? Or is that just a sign of the times, that we get much quicker new title releases these days on both formats (obviosly now with dvd as it has been established, but do they schedule the Blu production well before theatrical release?).

And going even further....

Another post mentioned the new 4K studio that would be doing Minority Report (i think that's generally what it said). How much, if at all, will one additional studio increase the rate of release for catalog titles (which to me seems to be gaining speed every passing week)? I'm not complaining, just really curious as to the impact 1 has on the overall. Will it be 1 of 10, or 1 of 1000 when it is up and running?

Lastly...
I've been wanting to purchase JFK on Blu, but it's over a year old and I still cant find it for less than $17 shipped. Is this because they only made "X" amount in the time they had for production and now there are only so many to go around, now causing it to maintain a higher price? Or simply a market effect of what people are willing to pay?

Any takers to my questions, thank you in advance!

If you want it, and it is available, buy it ($17.00 is a fair price).

Waiting for a price that suits you is fine, but the way you phrased your questions imply that you feel differently. In which case you don't value the movie that highly.

+1. There is no way I'd ever wait more than a year for one of my favorites to drop in price. Just cough up the $17 and enjoy it

What you consider to be "unworthwhile" or "strictly rental movies" may be loved by many who are happily anticipating a release on Blu.

Here is a perfect example. While you like musicals, I can't stand them. For me, muscials are worth less than a rental...nothing! But hey, nobody's perfect. While you may be looking forward to the release of the title you mentioned, I could personally care less if they are ever released.

So if nothing but musicals were being relased, I may ask myself, "Why are these terrible movies being released while all the good movies are not?" If that were the case, there would still be someone, such as yourself, who was happy as a little clam.

There are still a lot of catalog titles I would love to own that haven't even come close to being announced for release. I guess all we can do is be patient.

...quite the contrary. I value the movie highly, I may end up buying it at that price. I was more or less wondering why there was so little price fluctuation for a title that has had some time to do so (also knowing it's a love/hate type of film). Just looking for insight on why it has held it's price so well.

I'm new in my building my blu-collection, so although a $17-19 for JFK may be a fair price, it is still a fair price that is outside my trigger point.

I haven't been waiting for a year to get it, haha, I just know it has been out roughly that long. I've been following it's price for a couple months now. I can live without it until it's price comes down. But will it? And if not...do you know why not (more or less trying to relate back to the OP)? Is this a title that will sustain it's price even with apparent little demand, due to what seems to be very few available titles (or less than others out there)?

My guess, is they factor in multiple variables. First off, they don't want to release all of their best titles all at once. They make more money by staggering said releases. But, at the same time, they still want to have moving product.

So, they take lesser catalog titles that have probably sold well at the $5 mark on DVD for years, and then put them on a blu-ray disc. This way, the people that enjoy these "lesser" films, or the compulsive buyers that grab just about every movie, will still buy them as they come out. And when the bigger titles come out, in small doses, they'll hold more importance and sell higher numbers.

I appreciate all your enlightening comments but I particularly wonder about the film TITANIC -- it is the all-time highest grossing film so why is there no blu-ray?

Ask James Cameron.

It may release next year with Avatar.

He's currently having it converted to 3-D for a 2011 release, but it's unknown if that release is theatrical or Blu-ray or both.

I still don't get it. I've seen numerous films that I know for a fact will never make a lot of money get put out on blu ray. The dvds of those moneys did very poorly. Along with many other factors.
