I saw this movie at an early screening in 2000 and loved it. I'd never seen Mark Ruffalo in anything before, but he immediately caught my attention. I wasn't surprised he quickly went onto stardom after that.

For any in the NYC-area, the Paris theater will be showing this on the 20th from a 35mm Print, with a Q&A with Kenneth Lonergan, Matthew Broderick, Jon Tenney & Jeffrey Sharp

Scanning the synopsis and pics I've determined it's prime for a blind buy. The man wrote two episodes of Doug in 1993 so hell that's plenty of currency right there.
![]() Linney and Ruffalo both dishes in their younger days. Damn I am getting old ffs 2000 doesn't seem that long ago. Last edited by teddyballgame; 04-16-2025 at 02:03 AM. Reason: i stand corrected! |

I have never heard of this film. Judging by the number of ratings on IMDB, it's not some little known gem.
Shame on me. |

Been lurking on this website for something like a decade but this is my first post. So take my recommendation for what it's worth, but I'd like to encourage the folks who are thinking about blind buying this to take the plunge.
(Purely on the merits of the movie alone - I will be pre-ordering knowing nothing about the quality of the transfer.) If you love Manchester By the Sea, there's a good chance you'll love this too - they have a lot in common. I agree that Manchester is Lonergan's masterpiece but if all he had ever made was You Can Count on Me he'd still be right up there with Mike Leigh. I am probably biased for this movie, being the exact target audience for this story. But I suspect it's not so much that I see myself and my sister in these characters as that Lonergan captures something universal in their beautiful relationship. But David Edelstein said it better than I can in his review when the movie came out: https://slate.com/culture/2000/11/counter-culture.html Oh, and there's no shame in never having heard of this movie before. It doesn't have the lush cinematography of The Virgin Suicides; it's not avant garde or "foreign" (it was released by Paramount Classics); it doesn't plumb the emotional depths of Manchester; it reads like a filmed stage play, which, in a sense, it is. Neither was it obscure - it was nominated for Best Actress and Best Screenplay Oscars. That perfect amount of unremarkableness to make it semi-forgotten. Except by Criterion. Good on them. |

All three of Lonergan's films are masterpieces IMO. Figured this had to come from Criterion or Paramount Presents.
Anyway, I will probably opt for the BD. As wonderful as this film is, I don't see how it could benefit that much from DV/HDR10 even with it being shot on film (maybe I'd feel differently if it was coming from a label with better encoding). The fact that it's a new 4K scan and master will be more than enough for this IMO. |

Blind bought the 4K yesterday as I love Lonergan’s other films (as well as Linney and Ruffalo), but had never seen this one. Was blown away. Absolutely loved it. I thought the transfer looked great (especially when I popped in the blu ray to watch some of the extras and the saw film clips played during those. The UHD definitely looked better)

(Yes, the usual caveat for when they jam a "supplemental" feature on there, like Texasville and the color version of Basquiat.) Anyway, the 4k looks beautiful. And it has one of the better booklets in recent years, which I don't know is the case with the BD. |

There's only a $5 difference between the 4K and BD currently, so not really a huge amount to likely get the best presentation available on home video.

There are people who feel compelled to own everything in 4K, and that is perfectly fine and even respectable. I am not one of them, however. |
