PLEASE NOTE: Icon has a mixed history when it comes to transfers. Please be aware that it is unknown at the moment if this is a 1080p/24 or a 1080i/50hz transfer. If it is the latter, it will not play on a region A player regardless of the fact that it is region free. PLEASE ORDER WITH CAUTION UNTIL SOMEONE CAN CONFIRM.

[Thanks to singulus for pointing this out]

EzyDVD is not listing it as 1080p and it has the coverart up. While this is good news, I would still be cautious about ordering.

Have I missed something about Icon being a mixed bag, in terms of transfers? They did the transfer for the Australian version of The Descent, which is widely considered the best looking transfer of the movie. Hopefully they give Amelie the same treatment.

Certain movies, such as their version of "In Bruges" and "Miss Potter" were done in 1080i/50hz meaning they would not play on Region A players even though they were Region Free. They also messed up the audio on "Transporter 3" by mixing up the back channels.

Some movies, like "The Descent" are perfectly fine however.

Ah, I haven't heard of these examples, thanks for the info. Those definitely sound like sub-par releases...I wonder why they'd release those films in 1080i, I've only ever noticed concerts and certain documentaries being 1080i.

There's a review for the Canadian release of Amelie on this site, but it got ripped to shreds in the picture quality department, and its also 1080i, not p. I really hope Icon give it an awesome new 1080p transfer.

Nice avatar btw, the Final Fantasy series is an all time favourite of mine.

So this is a player issue? I have both a Region A player and a Region B player, so I would be ok to go play these discs, right?

You would need an HDTV capable of displaying 1080i/50hz content. Which is not a standard feature of US HDTV's.

I hope it is 1080p... I'm not holding my breath given icon's track record.

Is the difference really that noticeable? In Bruges is in 1080i yet it looks great on my player and tv. I'm a newbie to all this. Can someone explain the difference to me?
Cheers,
Carcuss.

I think it is, but that depends on your equipement and eyes as well. Also the 1080i transfer at 50i frames a second have a 4% speed up. Which is bad.

^^^ I don't think the 50i would be a PQ problem (meaning: I don't think you will see any difference). But the wrong speed is a bad thing. Also users with region A equipment may have problems, playing the 50i content (player and/or display).
