I imported the original US Universal release of the film when it came out, because I wanted the Director's Cut, which didn't get UK release. I saw the theatrical cut in the cinema and owned the DVD. There's actually a notice that comes on screen about the picture quality, saying that the film has a particular look and it's a not a fault!

The big thing to say with the 88 Films release is that it's a much better encode. There's a moment early on in the film when Crockett and Tubbs are in a car, talking in low light, where the whole screen on the old release seemingly becomes a riot of video noise - probably what the warning was about. That's no longer an issue on the 88 Films version: the scene looks fine. The digital video look Michael Mann and Collateral cinematographer Dion Beebe go for is something you either embrace or hate. I really like it and I still wish someone like HBO had made a TV spin-off in the same style.

There are aspects of the story I dislike, mainly the lack of Miami itself in the film, whose story is borrowed in part from the TV episode Smuggler's Blues and the Calderone stories. I feel like this film is a 'first sequel' to a non-existent original film. I would have loved to see Crockett and Tubbs actually working Vice on the streets of Miami in the film, dealing with a case among local organised crime, undercover cops, drug dealers, prostitutes and pimps. 'Going international' is really what you do when you've established your base and characters in a first film. Here, we have characters called 'Gina Calabrese,' 'Stan Switek' and 'Larry Zito' but if you don't know the original show, you have no idea who they are, and if you do know the show, you're aware of how different they are (particularly Gina) from their TV counterparts. Nevertheless, as a modern day take on Miami Vice, being old enough to have liked the original, I really enjoyed this film.

I'd absolutely recommend that anyone in the UK go for this release. I'm biased because I like the film, but who buys films they hate?
