Nielsen/VideoScan Numbers ending September 16th

http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/ques...2307/index.php

WE: BD-61% HDD-39% YTD: BD-66% HDD-34% SI: BD-61% HDD-39%

^^^Yup, updated original post. Awesome indeed. It's only going to get better during the holidays for BD, and IMO, not even Transformers will get the job done for HD DVD...we'll see though.

Transformers will do well for HD-DVD. Rat and PotC3 will do well for BD.
I'm not so sure why everyone is so worried about Transformers.

Quote:
1 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End BV $960.4
2 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix WB $928.7
3 Spider-Man 3 Sony $890.5
4 Shrek the Third P/DW $780.3
5 Transformers P/DW $693.0
6 The Simpsons Movie Fox $503.9
7 300 WB $456.1 $210.6
8 Ratatouille BV $412.6
9 Live Free or Die Hard Fox $368.2
Look at box office performance for 2007. 5 exclusive BD titles, and only 2 HD DVD exlusives.

Transformers placed a distant 5th in sales (~$700 million US) with Pirates brining in almost $1 billion US.

I'm sure Shrek will sell well but not as well as the other 4 in the top 5 because of it's demographic. Alot of it's ticket sales were to families taking their children to the theater and aren't HD DVD enthusiasts.

I think Transformers will be their best seller so far for sure, based on the box office earnings(oops after looking at Rike's post Shrek made more money). But it also going up against. Spider-Man Trilogy, Die-Hard Collection, Pirates 3, Cars and Ratatoullie. Those are going to be HUGE earners for BD and top quality titles as far as PQ and SQ. The audio on HD Transformers is an insult.

we need a buy a thon for Oct 16 to counter Transformers I don't want HD-DVD having even 1 week in 4Q over us, I want to block them out completely and have steady growth for Blu-ray.

The concern with Transformers is that is really the only week HD DVD has a chance to win the weekly Nielsen.

Are those world-wide numbers? The amounts are so much more than the HM chart on the front page of this weeks release.

To me this almost seems inevitable. BD has almost nothing out in that time frame to counter. (Fantastic Four is out a couple weeks before). But one or two week out of 52 means little. The small HD DVD win (I'm going to speculate it will be around 57:43 for HD DVD the week it comes out) will quickly be slienced after two weeks when Spiderman 3 comes out Blu-Ray will win by such a large margin (possibly even above the 70:30 ratio) corporations will see these numbers and know what it means. After this week Blu-Ray sales will continue to increase the gap and by the time Pirates of the Caribbean comes out the sales will be around the 75:25 or more mark.

I don't see Shrek doing very much against these three movie releases or even most of the others in the top 20.

Yes those are the worldwide numbers. The ones shown on Nielsen are Domestic.

I just read the first two articles on HMR. It seems that Hollywood majors and minors are going, "What the hell were you thinking, Paramount?" Paramount just alienated itself first with the defection, then the Spielberg kiss-off. Heads are going to roll at the end of the war.

I am pleased to see that the 300 ratio for BD to HD DVD has improved to 100:61 compared to about 100:71 last week.

This is precisely why I think the BDA needs to drop a bombshell around this week...the rumored $399 PS3 perhaps a week or two before, thus spiking BD sales, or maybe a suprise release by WB of The Matrix, V for Vendetta, or Batman Begins.

We all know they have to see this as weak link in terms of weeks, and it seems the BDA has been quiet about that week...almost too quiet.

Hopefully you're right, but again, I'm not so sure it's a big deal if HD DVD were to win those two weeks. Studios doing research are going to see the blatant empty space there for Blu-Ray and expect HD DVD to win. What WOULD make a difference is if Blu-Ray were to still win those weeks even with nothing major to offer. That would sway even the most blind studios.

An HD DVD win when it goes up against nothing means nothing and studios/retailers know this. It's if Blu-Ray were to win with nothing against everything that would be the real eye catcher.

Flat out those WB announcements aren't going to happen, and sorry, it's not going to have the impact of "hooray we're getting titles HD has had for up to a year"

I think they'll make this announcement before Halo 3 hits. Maybe this weekend.

That would fit the mo of publicly denying price drop only days before it hits.

Hurry up and post something marzetta7!
