USA Panasonic DP-UB820-K issue?

Hi, so today I watched Logan 4K color disc just fine on my Panasonic DP-UB820-K player. I then went to put in Game of Thrones S6D2 and now it won't play. Like at all. I tried restoring to factory default settings, but that didn't help. I then put in Glass 4K disc, then normal Blu-ray and same thing. At first it showed some message but went away too fast to read it. But then when I go to play, it just stops and doesn't read the 3 disc's I tried at all. Is my player bricked? Bought it back on Dec 19, 2021 from Amazon.

Update: Just tried unplugging the power and HDMI cable and that seemed to work. Fingers crossed. Weird issue.

Check for FW update but unplug was a good idea.

This happened to me a couple of times. All discs (no matter if it was 4K, Blu-ray, or DVD) would not read. I figured out later that it was a power issue and that my surge protector was not giving the player enough power to read the discs.

Replacing my older surge protector with a new one seemed to do the trick. Haven't had the issue for at least 2 years now.

I’ve seen a similar issue where Dolby Vision will not play and SDR Conversion takes over that will only be resolved by powering the unit off completely.

The reason I mention it, if quick boot on the player is enabled, powering off the player doesn’t truly power the unit down, instead putting it into standby. The unit can go a very long time without actually powering down.

This issue might also be resolved simply by powering off / on with quick boot disabled.

I've had an 820 for a little over a year now. I kept encountering an issue where I would power the player ON for the first time since I last watched a disc on it, then instead of booting up a disc menu, it would power OFF. A few people on a different thread suggested my unit wasn't getting enough Power, which I found kind of ridiculous. Just to be on the safe side, I plugged the unit directly into a wall socket as opposed to using a power strip - same thing kept happening. Now I know the player remains on standby mode so instead of "Power" I press "Play" and the menus boot up.

I don't know if I like my player being on Standby for days on end but at least I figured out what was causing the issue, which was hella annoying.

Glad to hear this helped!

If you turn off quick boot, on/off will work traditionally. You know, actually turning the unit off and on. The downside is longer boot times, but the upside is it resolves some of the quirks running a device in standby mode for weeks, months or years can cause. I highly suggest anyone who has struggled with their player to try this out.

I had MAD MAX (first film) play through when I got it, then a month later, the plyer would not recognize it. I cleaned the disc with screen-clean and a microfiber cloth (center to edge) and it's worked ever since.

Before cleaning, in the sun, I could see a streak of haze on the disc but cleaning it worked perfectly. I've found that worked on a few discs that were pixelizing. There's a theory about 'off-gassing' (vapors from the chemicals in the plastic cases). Might be true.

I couldn't find the exact thread for this post, so, I will use this one. My second Panasonic DP-UB9000 has been swapped for pixelating, freezing, and skipping. Same issues as the first one and this one again lasted about 15 months. I am so thankful that I have the Geek Squad extended warranty. I really hope the third time is a charm and this one lasts. The issues mainly occur with BD-66 discs and very few BD-100 <1%.

Factory reset, cable swap, etc. Just like the first player. When I got the second, all discs played and then it started having issues around 13 to 14 months. Same cables work fine with my two other 4K players that play the discs fine.

The first player really got the discs very hot and the second one only got them warm. I hope this third one keeps the discs cooler like the second. The Panasonic always gets the discs warmer than the Oppo or Reavon.

I've had two "significant" issues with my UB820:

1) Occasionally a narrow band (roughly 2cm/1 inch) of sparkles will show on the left hand side of the screen. Looks exactly like sparkles caused by a bad HDMI cable, but it isn't. I know because I've tried about 10 different cables, and it happens on all of them. Also, a bad HDMI cable will make the whole screen sparkle, not just localised in one specific area. It happens with all formats (Blu-ray, 4K (SDR, HDR 10 and Dolby Vision)). Turning the player off and on usually fixes it. Sometimes when that doesn't work, leaving it off for longer "fixes" it.

2) It has just recently refused to load two Blu-ray discs. The first was Umbrella's The Fall, then Captain America: Brave New World. The player's on screen display pop-up will show "loading", cut to a black screen for a split second, then return back to the main player menu. With CA: BNW I noticed the display panel flashed something about High Clarity Audio. After turning the player off, it will then load them without a problem. All 4K discs load fine.

Other than these two problems, I've had some minor ones, such as a pop-up message saying something about an incompatible card (?), and the player taking forever to turn off.

I've never had a single playback issue, though (such as skipping, freezing or pixelation problems many have reported).
