From what I’ve read, I think “original elements” refers to a combination of original camera negative where available, plus the background plates that were captured on 35mm and filmed-out elements for the vfx shots. I think they described it like that because it wasn’t just one negative, interpositive or DI, but a combination of those. But it sounds like they did 4K scans of everything they could, which is the best we could hope for. I wish Disney had given the transfer a BD-100 though, especially given what they’re charging.

If it’s from a DI would a new BR make much difference other than encode?
Maybe, maybe not, but they did it with KoH anyway and we got a bonus disc with the extras too. With M&C they could've remastered the Blu and put the extras on there if they didn't want to do a separate disc for those. But no, this is pretty much the cheapest option and so it's got 2 for £30 written all over it.

Yeah, it is a shame they didn’t port the legacy extras over.

I should still have my DVD so I'm not sweating any missing extras.

I'm going to keep my Amazon preorder even though I have another copy incoming from Orbit. That second copy could help finance a large order someday

Hmmm. A lot of people go gaga over Atmos, but according to Ralph Potts at AVS, the bass is closer to the Blu Ray than the DVD:

Absolutely this. It's ludicrous.

As in, it's actually still there, instead of obliterated, and you can still see it

Default Caps/screenshots - Base Layer + DV FEL vs Base/HDR10 Layer

CAPS:

Dolby Vision vs Base Layer:

Doesn’t have the best grain structure but it seems to hold up okay-ish, especially considering the bitrate. Will hopefully have a chance to watch it in full this weekend.

Should have been on a 100 and not a 66, but Bill Hunt said it was due to difficulty in sourcing the 100 discs.

Because of their great encoding and no filtering of the grain.

He’s also a real pro when it comes to spotting atrocious encoding. Here’s an example that shocked me so much when I saw it that I nearly lost it. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/My-Fa...345934/#Review

I bought that set after taking a brief look at the video score without paying attention to the caps and the review. When I got it, I sat there in disbelief when I saw the encodes. The quality of the films in that set isn’t better than what you’d find on YouTube with some of the biggest blocking artifacts I’ve seen with entire frames being fully pixelated. No joke in the slightest and the screenshots the reviewer put up show that. The review describes something entirely else but this astonishingly terrible encode didn’t get a mention.

Oh my! I had no idea. I barely read the reviews on here and mainly take the first impressions provided by other, more tech-savvy users on the forum threads. Sounds like I'd best keep it that way! Nevertheless, Randy MillerIII is a good egg!

Bill Hunt is full of sh*t and doesn’t want to honestly admit that Disney cheapens with BD-66 discs as he’s got so many "powerful industry sources" and contacts at Disney he doesn’t want to offend.

Disney doing the minimum. Which many have to accept because they're almost fine with doing nothing.

You’d think a film that won an Oscar and starred Mel Gibson at his peak would merit better than a dusty Warner Archive DVD. But apparently WB thinks anything post-1979 is “too modern” for proper treatment.

Linda Hunt deserves better than 480p.

For future Weir releases in 4k, that list is long - Gallipoli, Year of Living Dangerously, Mosquito Coast, Dead Poets Society...but we do have Witness. Looking forward to a lot more of his stuff in 4k. And looking forward to seeing this release next week.

I brought up the same questions about compression and rates on the Alexander thread and got mocked or lectured, but they appear to be fitting questions on MC. Granted, sometimes people are rude, or things don't come across as they should through text.

Has this been confirmed? It's the same transfer from 2008?

Is this limited? I thought these recent Disney steels were going to be the standard versions for their 4K releases.

Realllllllly long film is still realllllllly long, so in the case of dear Alex it can't be helped. Here it could've been, tho I'm not throwing this under the bus either without seeing it.
