I saw a 35mm release print screened at the Egyptian about a month ago.

Also saw it in theaters 6 times in 2002, including at a dollar theater the week the DVD came out. The DVD has the theatrical bleach bypass look. The BD does not.

Based on watching the BD, and seeing the print a few weeks back, the black areas ought to be almost totally crushed, which they aren't on the BD, and the BD is too colorful.

Yeah, look at screenshots, the DVD's color grading is definitely more how I remember it looking in theaters, to the best of my recollection. The BD is fine and it's not like it's overly saturated, but it definitely lacks that bleach bypass look.

I'm not sure if they claimed to recreate the look or what, but the UHD has little in common with the original look seen on the prints. The DVD actually gives a better impression of what it looked liked having been transferred from an ENR print (albeit a low-con one IIRC) as Geoff said.

I can't remember if I ever posted any scans of it on here, but I compared an archival print to the DVD and Blu-ray releases years ago and noticed some pretty striking differences amongst all iterations. I agree that the DVD is closer to the look seen on the prints (or at least the print I examined), but there were some pretty drastic differences between that and the DVD at times. Firstly, I observed a lot more cyan tones on the print with all the cool tones being more pronounced on the prints and this basically affected the whole film. The prints were also way more striking when it came to treatment of highlights and shadows which were far more intense than seen on the home video releases which flattened things out. If they really wanted to replicate the look of the prints while retaining a film-like rolloff then I figure that HDR would be perfect, but for whatever reason, very few bleach-bypassed films retain something even resembling the original look on home video. Sadly, that's not limited to just bleach-bypassed films though.

Again, very true, sorry, I didn't mean to suggest the DVD looked exactly like the release prints.

If the DVD came from an element with the bleach bypass, it was probably still a generation or two away from the release prints, where the effects seemed even more amplified.

You're absolutely right, on the 35mm print I saw a few weeks back, the whites were even more blown out and the blacks were even more crushed than on the DVD, but at least the DVD approximates the look, especially with the desaturation, while the BD is way too colorful and cheerful.

This shot is a great example:

If they just adjust the colors on the UHD to look more like the DVD, with no pronounced reds and yellows and such, I'll be happy.

While the Blu-ray looks desaturated, it still showed more variation in color compared to the print I looked at. However, the colors that remained on the print (blue, green, cyan) appeared to be noticeably more saturated than those on either the DVD or Blu-ray, if that makes any sense.

That makes sense, it's the saturated reds on the BD that stick out to me the most as looking unlike the theatrical prints.
