This exactly. As much as I love Eyes Without a Face, the BFI disc already looks brilliant and people get all flustered about a few pixels difference, ultimately.

Whilst I'm happy for people to discover this film again, I'd honestly prefer to see an upgrade of Head Against the Wall (which the French got a couple of year ago), we still don't have a UK Blu-ray of Judex over a decade after the US got theirs, and Blu-ray debuts of Therese and Shadowman would be an open goal at this point.

There’s a French Blu-ray without English subtitles…

…but I know people more tech savvy than me know ways of adding subs with Fire sticks and the like.

I'd rather have the moon on a stick than have to fiddle with a fire stick TBH; hoping Radiance will do the decent thing

It was never included and I can't see it in the initial 2015 announcement, so I assume it was just an early draft.

Ben has said that they 'tried' to include it so presumably there's some issue with the UK rights. Though that short has been pretty easily available elsewhere over the years, whereas I think the La premiere nuit restoration is still exclusive to the BFI at this point?

I agree with the other posts about Franju. A definitive collection of his shorts would be great, but a decent proportion of his features are also hard to come by in HD as well.

Yeah, I'm thinking if I manage to resist the urge... I'll leave these kind of upgrades to a future month possibly far away when it seems like I have no better purchases to make in terms of movies.

That's exactly my logic unless it's a notably different presentation (i.e. newer restoration). Still curious to see what it's like in 4K but not in a huge rush, so paying full whack for it is out of the question.

Hey I’m new to this thread…

So I apologize if this has already been discussed…

Does anyone have an opinion on the Flipside Short Sharp Shocks releases??

I really enjoyed the Ghost Stories for Christmas releases…

And was wondering if SSS was similar.

And now with Volume 4 being announced…

I thought maybe I would look into these.

Thanks!

I recommend getting ALL the Flipside releases, albeit some are OOP & one had to drop the short films for rights reasons.

Having said that this reminded me that I still need to get the 2nd volume of Ghost Stories for Christmas.

OrbitDVD had all of the first 3 in stock... until just a few minutes ago when I bought them.

Which Volume had to drop shorts??

Were they announced to be included but then dropped before release date??

Or were there multiple pressings and they were lost between pressings??

Off the top of my head, Deep End dropped a second disc of shorts. Can't remember any others. There have been a few cases where a short has been initially listed and dropped.

I don't think the Short Sharp Shocks were affected by such things. But regarding those SSS sets, I'd say each one has at least one really good short, not as consistent as Ghost Stories for Christmas. I would recommend The Appointment over the SSS volume that includes The Lake, as that also has it.

If you're not a completist (I am a Flipside completist) then maybe those sets aren't great, although I see Vol. 4 has The Black Angel, which I'd love to see in proper non-YouTube HD.

My top shorts in those sets:
1. The Lake
2. Wings of Death
3. Hangman
4.-5. The Face of Darkness, Return to Glennascaul (although wasn't this one also on some other disc?)

The ONLY Flipside release that dropped shorts is Peter Watkins 1967 Privilege & the dropped shorts being The Diary of an Unknown Soldier (1959) & The Forgotten Face (1961) for rights reasons. The ONLY extra (out of a total of 3 originally) on the current BFI re-release is the trailer.

Here is a complete list of the Flipside titles so far (all BD unless stated):

000: Kim Newman's Guide To The Flipside Of British Cinema (DVD)
001: The Bed-Sitting Room
002: London in the Raw
003: Primitive London
004: Herostratus
005: All The Right Noises
006: Man of Violence
007: Privilege
008: That Kind of Girl

021: Voice Over
022: Her Private Hell
023: Nightbirds
024: The Black Panther

The ONLY thing that Deep End dropped was the bonus disc from the 3 disc LE. Peter Watkins 1967 film Privilege is the release that had to drop the director's 2 shorts he made in 1959 & 1961 for rights reasons.

Deep end has the short on both standard and limited edition on the Blu-ray, the second dvd on the limited only has a theatrical trailer and a Q&A with the stars.
On the third release of Privilege it retains all the extras but loses the spine number.

The 3rd one also changes artwork but on the 4th (ie current) release it reverses back to the original artwork & loses both the short films I mentioned.

In addition to my list here is some more info I forgot to include when compiling said list:

OOP

000: Kim Newman's Guide To The Flipside Of British Cinema (DVD)
001: The Bed-Sitting Room
006: Man of Violence (Reissued by 88 Films).
007: Privilege
008: That Kind of Girl
009: Permissive
011: The Party's Over
016: Joanna
025: You're Human Like the Rest of Them

For No. 7 you need to hunt down either of the following versions (there's also the original release of the film which has separate BD (in a thin case) & DVD editions) as they contain ALL the extras (the blue cover is dual format & the white cover is the one they forgot to include the spine number). Just avoid the most recent re-release (BD ONLY I think) which, in addition to going back to the original blue artwork, drops the 2 shorts I've mentioned so you'll have to check the back of the release to make sure before buying a copy.

Hope the above helps you out.

How do you know which one's are not in print? I've assumed the BFI shop is the answer, but it's been down for months.

Flipside are hit and miss for me. I traded in Joanna and The Orchard End Murder straight after watching them, so I personally would not suggest getting them all just for the sake of it.

From the BFI Facebook Group. Ben Stoddart unofficially lets people in it know about things like this etc.
