Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel star in this grisly French crime thriller, co-written and directed by Mathieu Kassovitz (La Haine) and newly restored in 4K.

Two French policemen - one an experienced detective, the other a reckless rookie - are brought together by the clues from their respective cases. As more murders occur, the two cops uncover an increasing number of horrific details that all point to a dark conspiracy.

Nice surprise! Here are my thoughts on the master and the Gaumont 4K.

Quote:
I think the old transfer is pretty good, so this new UHD is only a smaller upgrade but not insubstantial. Color grading is excellent without any lab tints and the encoding is good but not spectacular as a couple of exteriors they shot with finer-grained stock are dangerously close to collapsing due to lower bitrates (the film is often in the 30-40 MB range) and mild artifacts are visible, but no need to worry, this is fine work and can definitely be enjoyed. I checked in DV and HDR10 and couldn’t see a difference, which I take as a positive. Chroma noise is also not a problem.

I also have the Shout Factory Crimson Rivers 2, which I assume would not end up as a UHD disc.

Reading this having English subtitles will mean me triple dipping, I think.

Been quite some time since I last saw this. Will almost certainly be buying it though. Two really good actors. Always liked Vincent Cassel's work in particular. Look forward to the rewatch in 4K.

I’m glad that this has all the supplements of the Gaumont version. I didn’t get the French limited edition and they have the bad habit of omitting the blu-ray and thus most of the special features in regular releases, as they did here, so I’ll happily pick this release up instead sometime. I like the cover a lot as well.

I wonder if this will improve on the Gaumont encode.

If Curzon use VDMS again, which I hope and assume at this point, I think it will.

This will be a blind buy,I've only read good things about this movie and am aware that Matthieu Kassovits directed 'Gothika' with Halle Berry.
I was very impressed with his acting in the French spy series 'The Bureau' ('Le Bureau des Légendes') and I recommend this if you haven't already watched this.
This Curzon release has got a very nice front cover, but I am definitely not a fan of the upside down spine from this label, same sh*t happened with the 'Paris,Texas' release.
I'm going for the French release as it got English subs, still hoping for a 4K release of the sequel.

I had the original DVD back in the day and upgraded to the Gaumont 4K. I really like it but it’s still flawed as a film.

I think the star Vincent Cassell summed up what was wrong with it at the time.

“I can't help explain the film because I didn't understand it! We cut out everything in the film that was explanatory, therefore 'boring' [according to the director]. You end up with a film that's not boring but you don't understand it [at] all.”
