I don't know anything about dvr's. Would the dvr that I have listed work just like a tivo? Also, how much does the dvr service cost?

You can always walk into Best Buy and pick up the Direct TV receiver that you would like.

My suggestion is to call Direct TV up and see what they can offer you as a new customer.
