Arrived today - First Wave - Season one.

Really silly, Tracy Lords on the backcover while she did not got on the show before season 3! A selling point perhaps? Or do they even know what they have released?

Decided to go through my DVDs and see which I can sell vs which have exclusive special features versus 4K / Blu-ray that I’d like to keep.

This doesn’t display right on my set-up (UB450 + Panny A2 48”) - it either has black bars all around, with the film playing in 1:85:1 as if on a 30” screen, or if I try to zoom in I end up with a square image instead.

Can anyone explain?

^ It looks like you have a non-anamorphic DVD.

I added this OOP DVD to my collection today:

"The story of Scotty Pelk, a socially inept video store clerk who gets fired from his job and becomes a sensation as an online film critic."

Watched: Planet of the Apes: The Complete TV Series (1974)

I bought this set in February 2024 and finally got round to watching it this week! Cheaply made but still very decent with several well known guest stars chipping in to compliment the good performances of the lead actors especially Roddy McDowell who nails it as Galen.

Watched: Tom Horn (1980)

My annual re-watch of this moody off-beat western. It flopped at the box office but I love McQueens performance and the atmosphere of the old west. Still no BD release on its 45th birthday.

Oh that seems right, yeah. Bizarre that those still exist, I only bought this brand new in like 2022 from HMV.

I accidentally zoomed in when I first put it in the player so it was playing square and I was tempted to keep it as a curio because pan-and-scan has obviously (thankfully) disappeared in the 21st century. But then I took it out, put it back in, and it displayed exactly like that example!

Your DVD was released in 2003 and non-anamorphic DVDs were still pretty common back then. No newer DVD editions of that movie have been released since then.

Oddly enough, the U.S. DVD edition was also released in 2003, but it is anamorphic widescreen unlike the U.K. edition.

While Hanna-Barbera always credit The Honeymooners for inspiration for The Flintstones, I would be willing bet that they got the "Stone Age" idea from this film.

I enjoyed it and would buy the blu ray in a heartbeat!

I have that Dvd and it's the best looking dvd of the film I have found. Unfortunately, Susan Hart owns it and is keeping it and other films out of circulation. She is a real villain in my book and a disgrace to her late husbands work and legacy...
From wikipedia:
"Hart was married to producer James H. Nicholson in 1964, shortly after he had divorced his previous wife. They had one child and remained married until Nicholson's death in 1972."

"Hart now owns the rights to 11 movies made by her late husband's company: It Conquered the World (1956) and its 1966 remake Zontar, The Thing from Venus, Invasion of the Saucer Men (1957) and its 1965 remake The Eye Creatures, I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957), I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957), The Amazing Colossal Man (1957), Terror from the Year 5000 (1958), Apache Woman (1955), The Oklahoma Woman (1956) and Naked Paradise (1957)."

I have all the ones in red on Dvd but they are all VHS rips.

Watched:

Star Trek: Voyager - Seasons 1&2 (up to s2ep21 'Deadlock')

It's been a number of years since I watched 'Voyager', so it's been interesting watching through it again. With a series re-watch I tend to fire through them fairly quick, usually a couple of eps at a time, if not more.
I suppose the benefit of watching on disc, vs Netflix etc, is you have to get off your chair/arse every 4 episodes to swap the disc. So that can act as a good buffer, to stop you from just sitting for half a Saturday, burning through 1/2 a season. Though that would be quite a feat, given 'Star Trek' of this era was usually 26 episodes a season.
