Foundation season 3 faces agonizing filming delay amid multiple issues on hit Apple TV Plus show

Responding to some thoughts in this thread, in no particular order.

I read this morning that filming for Season 3 finished early this summer, late July I think, though now I can't find the article again. Because post-production for this show (and many others, sigh) takes a year, we shouldn't look for this to appear on our screens before mid-2025.

Blu-ray/4K? Keep your fingers crossed! First and foremost, showrunner David Goyer stated on the Bald Move "Foundation and Podcast" that the show would be released on Bluray but he didn't have a timeline. Likeways he couldn't stipulate to 4K. He did say they were trying to merchandise the show, and the first thing out of the gate is the lovely coffeetable book covering the first two seasons that came out last fall. Beyond that, some streamers are finally starting to loosen their iron grip on the content and let it come out on disc. For example, Amazon series The Expanse and Jack Ryan both came out in complete-series boxes over the past twelve months or so. Of course, both of those were produced by outside production companies that probably had some say on the issue written into their contracts with Amazon. Perhaps a more hopeful example is that Disney has released a number of their Star Wars and Marvel series on 4K now. So, while the wait and lack of news is agonizing, we just need to keep our fingers crossed. Those of us who have watched Foundation just cannot wait to see those eye-popping visuals pouring forth from a disc and not subject to erratic internet quality.

How is the show? As an Asimov fan who's read the complete Foundation series a number of times, I'd say it's very good. Yes, they take huge liberties with the story (or play jazz with it, as the saying currently seems to be), but they are getting the essence across. And honestly, the earlier books just would not be easy to translate to screen in a believable way. I mean, could you imagine people 20,000 years in the future sitting around and smoking, like they do in the early books?

Will they ever reveal Demerzel to be R. Daneel Olivaw? Yes, if the show lasts long enough. Their rights with the estate include only the 7 Foundation books, and someone else holds the rights to the Robot novels. However, Goyer ran into the head of the studio that holds the Robot rights at some event, and they struck a deal for Goyer to connect Demerzel to Daneel. So it should be coming.

Will they get to make all the episodes that want? I don't think anybody has that crystal ball. All the streamers have been pulling back hard, Apple being no exception, but this is a prestige title for Apple. Hopefully they will see it through, or if not, hand it off to someone else, like Netflix. Goyer has said he has several "off-ramps" for concluding the story if he doesn't get all the desired seasons, I believe one after season 4 and another after season 6, if memory serves. But we really want to see the whole thing! The estate has given him Asimov's notes on how he intended to conclude the story, had he been able to before death took him. I'd love to know. The final book sequel, Foundation and Earth, left things very open-ended. You know what the characters had decided to do, but will they stick with it?

Well, that's all I can think of for now.

First 3 episodes are spectacular. Best scifi going right now. So glad Apple is paying for these.

An absolutely gorgeous show to begin with! Every penny they spend on this show is seen on the screen.

The way they tell this story, even if heavily updated in comparison to Asimov's original story, makes it also better. There are twists and remixes of the original material, that you don't see coming and that makes it so engaging to watch even for book readers and fans. If the latter could only let go of an adaptation that to them should be so much closer to the source still...

It's my favorite show on TV right now, and I can only hope they'll continue with the original plan of eight seasons... but it feels very ambitious if not too ambitious given the visual spectacle that surely is anything but cheap to produce.

I just hope enough people think like me, so Apple continues believing in this vision!

I've only caught the first episode of the new season so far but it was great. Lots of interesting new storylines being set up. I liked the quick refresher course on the Three Laws of Robotics. And it was cool to see Alexander Siddig (Bashir from DS9) in sci-fi again.

Fourth episode brings together a whole heap of plot threads from the first two seasons that they seem to have been planning very carefully. Had not even considered that there would be a further explanation behind the
[Show spoiler] destruction of the star bridge
from way back at the very start of the show. Can’t wait to see where this goes now.
