I would say up to around GT3 is when I was pretty invested. After 4 it completely went downhill.

I'm mainly annoyed with the online only BS GT7 introduced where they gutted the single player experience so once you offline, you lost all your progress. That's why I haven't bought the game. My brother did and I play that.

Now that hardware advancements seem to have hit a brick wall, there seems to be very little improvement in graphics now. I have a feeling a lot of the visual improvements in recent releases of Gran Turismo have gone unnoticed by most people.

The Forza Motorsport series has released a new version every 2 years since 2005. It may not have been as photorealistic as Gran Turismo, but most Forza Motorsport fans either didn't notice or didn't care. What Forza Motorsport fans did care about was that Forza Motorsport offered several features that Gran Turismo didn't initially offer, including:

-A livery editor for custom paint jobs
-More freedom in customizing car parts for better performance, such as swapping engines and drivetrains from one car to another
-Damage that could not only be seen, but could degrade the vehicle's performance
-A racing line that showed where to drive and turned yellow and red to indicate that you needed to hit the brakes (turning green when you slowed down enough)
-An automatic braking feature for novices
-The ability to buy and sell customized cars online

Now if Gran Turismo or Forza Motorsport gave players the ability to pick a city and design a race course through the streets of that city, that would be awesome.
Good points there.
Another thing that improved was being able to turn the car around. I think in GT1, the game will not let the player turn around to go the other way. It was some strange turning barrier that prevented it. They finally fixed that and allowed for burnouts too if not careful with the acceleration.

I like Gran Turismo when it was in 3D on PS3 too. I think that was the first game to introduce the dash camera interiors if not mistaken.

My favorite game for simulation driving would be Project Cars 2. Right away, the game gives the player complete control over everything. So you can drive any car you want, set up any type of race, time of day, laps, track, etc. and just have fun creating your own season. I made an entire F1 season of races. You can also adjust the CPU difficulty and the game is very forgiving on easiest if you wanted that. PS4 though, so the graphics have some weaknesses. Otherwise, great game. I never played PC3 as I hear it took a step backwards.

Here's something else. Why not have speed painting competitions in Gran Turismo 8? You are shown the paint job of a car, and you have to recreate that paint job before time runs out. If you get it 100% accurate before time runs out, great. If not, you get a grade from 0-100% when the time runs out. That would enable there to be a winner even if nobody gets the car 100% accurate in the time allotted.
