The biggest issue the MCU had to contend with in its earliest years was that they didn't have the rights to the X-Men or the Fantastic 4 - those were at Fox back then. So they went with the ones they did have the rights to.

But now they've got them all together again, so they can go on and do a start-over after Secret Wars and they'll be using all of their characters, so the so-called Avengers won't have to be the only important grouping.
