I’m in the same boat and it is frustrating. Also looking at getting a Panny UB820 for that same reason (auto DV switch).

I often pop in a disc, and by the time the disc has loaded, I remember to check for DV and/or switch it over. And then, you always got to remember to switch it back to HDR once you’ve finished your viewing.

JB often has decent sales on ‘em, so will pick one up soon enough. My X700 had worked pretty well, for the most part, but it appears that the UB820 is the way to go.

Its also something I thing about, potentially getting another Panny UB820 as a back up, for when they eventually stop making them.

I have one Panny UB820 and one Multiregion Sony UBP-X800 (that only really gets used for its multiregion playing powers)..... the Panny is a better 4k player! I alos have a PS5 and Xbox Series X, both of which I assume can play 4k but I've never tried

I ordered through BigW, worked out at $562 with a $10 off coupon. Seems like a decent price.
I'll be keeping the X700 for the multi region and as back up, but will send the UB820 away to be modded at some stage.

That is a really good price. Haven’t seen it cheaper then that, as far as I can recall.

Checked out JB and they have it for $619. Interestingly enough, it says “No In-Store options”, which I doubt is absolutely true. They are probably down to 1-2 per store… Which initially I thought was disconcerting. However, checked Good Guys, my local and 3 other stores within 25km have stock, at the same price.

While it seems that disc is dead, was browsing US Amazon (for modded BD/UHD players), and they claim the entry level Sony BD player (BDP-S1700U) has sold 6000+ units in the past month. Not sure if that is a large volume, for 300+ million people, but it also doesn’t sound like chump change.

I got both of my UB820s for about $500 (though the first one was many years ago)

Bought my second one last year when JB had it for $538 (for reference). Using the $30 off $300 Perks promo brought it down to $508

It was also down to $488 at The Good Guys eBay last November (see here)
If it was down to this price, one could try bargaining with JB Sales online

Hopefully during the Boxing Day sales, it might get close to those kinds of prices, as I can’t afford the 820 at the present price.

I was looking at picking up the Panasonic DMR-UBT1GL-K a couple of years back, for circa $700+, I asked could JB go any lower, and they knocked close to another $100 off!. However, at the last minute, while in the store, since I couldn’t see the Dolby Vision logo on the box, I did a quick search on specs and found out that it did not have DV, and no update with DV either.

I pulled the plug on buying it, even though the clerk kept pushing that DV wasn’t all that important, despite his original confession that he knows almost nothing about physical media.

https://www.panasonic.com/au/consume...-ubt1gl-k.html

The UB1 was going to be my primary UHD player and BD recorder, in one (I do have a Panny BD recorder, hooked up to a 15 year old Sony LED, in a spare bedroom). Since I have quite a few F1 season reviews on VHS, from pre-HD broadcast days, I have been slowly backing up the tapes on BD-R.
I digress. My point being that is always a good idea to ask for a little extra off, even with a good deal.

The third HT system that I invested in was the Yamaha RVX-385, which came down to about 40 percent off at the time, and I still asked for a deal. The Good Guys clerk did his thing on his “palm pilot” and said “I can give you a dollar off”, and I said…

Had this arrive suddenly and unexpectedly today. Was expecting it to be next week or the week after that.No better feeling than a parcel arriving earlier than anticipated

Arrived today from Arrow:

This was my first order direct from Arrow. No complaints. Ordered Thief on the 25 August, and Fistful on the 26th. They were sent in separate packaging. One was in your standard bubble envelope. The other in a box with paper stuffed inside. The box could have fit half a dozen Blu's. Not sure why they went with that.

Both undamaged, and here in 10 days.

For anyone curious, the mailing company on the UK side was Evri. I got an email with tracking from them. Once they hit Australia they were handed over to Amarex, and I got an email from them this morning saying they were onboard for delivery.

Fingers crossed my Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad, The Ugly pre-orders go as smoothly.

My local Cashies has stopped buying Blu's so the era of trawling through a few hundred titles is over.

The nearby op shop had a small selection and I came away with these for $3 each:

Managing to resist the JB sale but did add this eBay purchase to the Ghibli collection:
