![]() The Amateur (2025: James Hawes)
![]() ![]() First viewing. A more than decent and entertaining spy and vengeance film, quite different to those I'm used to, having a computer nerd as the protagonist. What it has in common with the classic spy movies is the many different locations the plot happens, mostly European ones by the way, and some inconsistencies I won't elaborate here. The most important message I draw from the film is that we're surveilled everywhere, at least there where many people are around. The East German Stasi and similar organisations would have wet their trousers of joy if they had seen this. (Talking of German, "heller" means "brighter" in that language, for light intensity and intelligence, like in English.) 7/10 |

![]() ![]() So This Is Paris (1926) 4/10 One of the few American Lubitsch films I had yet to watch; found this on YouTube as a public domain video with no audio. Again, this is a tale of two movies. One is full of stereotypical silent film acting, especially from Monte Blue. The plot and characters are trifling and hackneyed - not memorably different from The Marriage Circle. The story seems like a mere coat rack on which to try out gags and show off Warners' production design. 3/10 The other movie approaches jaw-dropping in its wit, visual cleverness (the editing is fresh even 99 years later), and, yes, its production design. And then there's the showstopping party scene, which makes F.W. Murnau and Baz Luhrmann look like amateur plagiarists. All the elements of the Lubitsch Touch are here, sadly without the touch. 6/10 It's clear that Lubitsch - while as inventive as he ever was - is being held back by the lack of sound here, just one year too early. I'm sure my rating would rise with a good soundtrack, though. But not sure how likely this is to ever get a proper home video release, now that it is in the public domain. If it ever does, I think folks are going to be stunned at how a 1926 film can look. |

![]() Il boss [The Boss] (1973: Fernando Di Leo)
![]() ![]() First viewing. I like that it's not only the mafiosi who are the bad guys in this film and also that Christian symbols are only used to pretend some sort of decency with for instance the cross standing on the big shot's desk. 7/10 |
