Hello Penton,

Thank you for posting again. Your contribution to these forums is invaluable to its members.

While you are on vacation from these forums I strongly recommend spending some of your free time and go see the 3D version of "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs."

Sony did an awesome job turning this children's book into an animated feature. Cloudy felt like a Pixar movie (story wise) and the animation and 3D work is outstanding. I can't wait to see this movie again on Blu-ray.

See Penton, I told you you were loved

Personally I'm very curious to see the breakdowns on Wizard of Oz between the gift set and the Target/WM exclusive cheaper and cheapest versions. Definately a worthy experiment to find the best balance between swag and price to make sure worthy classics are appropriately profitable

This article is a must read for anyone that is positive (or negative) about 3D in order to learn more about the topic.

Pay particular attention to the grass roots movement alluded to (chimps and gorillas) at the very bottom of the page under the paragraph heading “3DIY” – which is probably little known to most people outside the industry.

In regards to 3D for the home, I would not expect it to be as expensive an upgrade as early adopters are presuming at this point.

I didn't realize "Dial M for Murder was filmed in 3D. Is there any chance this movie could be re-released with modern 3-D technology to theatres?

Dial M wasn't the only 'A' list 3D title from the Golden Age of the 50s. Kiss Me Kate was another.

Both, I think, are coincidentally owned by WB.

Dial "M" was one of the few 3-D films of the era to use the technology as more than a titillating shock effect. Used extremely sparsely throughout the film's 105 minute running time, it comes into play as Grace Kelly is being attacked and reaches to the foreground for a pair of scissors with which to defend herself.

In this case reaching directly into the audience for their aid.

This is Hitchcock taking what amounted to a rather dumb craze, and once saddled with it by the studio, making it something of substance and import -

adding to the dynamics of the film, and thereby affecting the audience.

As to bringing it to a modern audience, the greatest problem would be the balancing of the left and right eyes, both in WarnerColor, to make them match.

Some other Golden Age 3D titles that didn't overdo the gimmick shots:

Miss Sadie Thompson - Rita Hayworth and Jose Ferrer
Kiss Me Kate (a few gimmick shots, all isolated and excised in 2D prints of the film)
Inferno - Robert Ryan and Rhonda Fleming (a few gimmick shots, but all integrated into the story)
Money From Home - Martin and Lewis

Incidentally, Money From Home was shot in dual-camera 3-strip Technicolor, for a total of 6 rolls of film rolling simultaneously!

That must have been a fun job for the negative cutter

One aspect that the above article doesn’t comment much about, to which I feel compelled to make note of because it may be a huge driver in bringing 3D into the home, and the fact that it was the hot topic of discussion at the recent 3D Entertaiment Summit in Los Angeles both during several panel discussions as well as during *hallway conversations* ……is the application for live action sports, given the recent ESPN live telecast of the USC vs. Ohio State NCAA football game on Sept. 12.

Folks, that was the best public 3D testing of a live game telecast that I have yet to see. No headache, no nauseous feeling, just an overall very pleasant and eye-opening experience…..dare I say almost addictive!

The only negatives that I could nitpick about were that on some of the zoom outs the imagery became slightly blurry and sometimes the football itself was difficult to follow on punts and kickoffs, also slightly unsaturated colors of the overall imagery.

I expect those drawbacks to be worked out with further refinements in the whole process. There was also a lack of camera angles compared to conventional 2D broadcasts, a drawback which is amenable to adding more camera rigs to the production and to which Vince Pace (AVATAR: second unit D.P.) indicated that future test telecasts will have a 3D Skycam (on an overhead cable) in action.

Enthusiastically enjoying the experience.jpg

I'd seen that footage a few weeks ago, late at night. Blew my mind. I'm actually saddened that it's footage that's not going to be in the movie; all I can do is hope the "better" footage really is so. What are you fighting for on this, just getting it released in Europe? Seems like the Daft Punk soundtrack alone would justify it...
