just wanted to share:
last night, watching a movie, ps3 stops dead in the middle. tear fell, body trembled. ylod. wah. went here, linked to the two youtube videos to solder the cpu/gpu back to the mother board and applied the silver thermal compound (which btw, i can see why it may have stopped working. the original thermal compound on there was BAKED dry. the fan was running at full speed and it has LOTS of ventilation) long story short: after about 5 hours gathering necessary tools (heat gun and right sized screw drivers) i disassembled, working the heat gun magic and applied the silver stuff, reassembled, and now works like a charm. i also vacuumed and dusted off all parts of the insides and components/mother board. fan runs on lowest setting now all the time. i have a 60 gb launch ps3 that i purchased back in march 07. never bought an extended warrenty cause i couldn't afford it after buying 2 games and the system. yay! thanks to this forum, i saved myself 140 bucks (excluding the cost of the heat gun and right sized screwdrivers and thermal compound) and have retained all my down loaded games and saves. suuuhhhh weet!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

hi, i'm having a problem with my ps3. It's a 40gig and i've had it about 2 years. i was playing a game last night, all was well. It was off for about 15 hours, and i turned it on, and the sound came on, just no picture. I tried to reset from hdmi to component but no luck. any suggestions/ fixes?

I think it's just an HDMI handshaking issue, because if I change the TV input back and forth a few times, it'll eventually kick in. Go figure. ![]() |

My PS3 recently YLOD'd with Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 in it... before I take the BD drive apart to get the disc out I was wondering if it is a SATA drive, because I could likely connect it to a PC and eject that way if it is.

Does anyone have a step by step guide for doing the heating and pasting? I can get the PS3 apart, just worried about what to do with the heating and thermal paste.

This is getting frustrating!
I'm taking it over to my friends tomorrow(he has a heat gun). We're gonna go at it on our own. I don't feel like forking over another 75 for a "professional" reflow. Next step is a slim I guess. I'll post our results in a couple days. ![]() |

Ok, I haven't searched on this topic hard enough, but does anyone of you know if there is a freezing issue with the new slim?
I bought mine (US version) about 3 weeks ago, updated to the latest firmware and all and it works perfectly without a single problem. However, a friend of mine got his (Hong Kong version) around the same time, but his already been freezing up while playing BDs or games more than several times. Am I lucky or is there a problem with certain versions or firmwares? ![]() |

I've had the slim since Aug 28 - has not froze on me once
I wish I could say the same thing about my 60GB - in the 1st month, the thing froze on me numerous times...but it lasted 2.5 yrs I'd say to your friend to get it replaced...I don't know how the return policy is in Hong Kong but do what he can to get a new one |

Hi, i don't know if im posting in the right area but i'll just shoot and hope for the best! lol Anyways. I just bought the regular 80 gig Ps3 (not the slim just the big fat one). So, (make a long story short) it fell... Yes, and its perfectley fine except the drive wast working. so.. i popped it open and it just happened to be the arms that grab the disc. But i still have a problem i recconnect my drive and theres no power. i looked at all the other "ps3 blu-ray drive fix" but the have a different type of hookup. I have a white thin flat wire that is taped on by white tape (not by me but by sony). so.. if anyone could help me out or point me in the right direction.. Thanks!

I keep getting these graphical glitches in ps3 games... Polygon's from peoples fingers extend forever, or polygons out of the background, etc. This polygon will extend forever and then you can walk right through it, so its like an imaginary wall...
Think my PS3 is dieing? |
