Newbie here..
I have just started with investing in BDs. So far, I bought more than 30 movies from Amazon USA Could someone explain why all the movies are in Letterbox? I prefer it in Full Screen.. P.S. When I see Trailers- it is in Full Screen, also MKV files also in Full Screen. |

Great way to welcome a new member.
![]() Welcome to the forum. There are other threads regarding this in the forum. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ight=letterbox https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ight=letterbox https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ight=letterbox Now I haven't checked out the links provided, so it may not be where you could find an answer to your question. However, this next link will provide several other threads regarding (letterbox), take your time and check them out. ![]() https://forum.blu-ray.com/search.php...5&pp=25&page=2 Plus I don't see the issue with letter box in my opinion. However, for each their own. Last edited by Lord_Stewie; 09-29-2009 at 06:43 AM. |

OP: you don't get the full screen because film is originally designed and made to be wider than your TV screen (i.e. 2.35:1 aspect ratio). When such a wider movie is mapped on to your TV set, you would get top and bottom blackbars.
You can select 1.85:1 aspect movies that will almost fill your screen. Check blu-ray.com movie reviews to find out the aspect of the movies. You can order from amazon easily through that page. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/ |

Personally I find it very interesting that some people really hate widescreen or letterboxing on their T.V., some people just tolerate it, while I really love it. I don't know if it's just the way people see things differently (all the focus is on the black bars rather than the picture), or if years of movie watching help you to grow accustomed to it.
I am of the opinion that if your display is large enough a really nice wide scope movie has an elegant look to it and allows for more creative composition. I am never distracted by the black bars whether on top or on the side, but I know that some people really dislike them. This kind of thread will never go away because new people are always discovering the world of Blu-ray. We need to be patient with them and maybe some of them will become real wide screen cinephiles. |

Full Screen as in 1.78 or 1.33? If you are saying 1.33, I don't think Blu-Ray is for you.

Cmon guys....this forum should be welcoming toward new members and strive to educate, inform, and clarify any misconceptions...IMO, the "not this again" posts and head-banging/popcorn munching smileys are really getting tiresome. If you don't have something to contribute to the thread, just move along ![]() Last edited by Sussudio; 09-29-2009 at 03:02 PM. |

They are letterboxed because the aspect ratio on the blu-ray is (large majority of the time) what the film was filmed in, not a cropped version like those full screen (1.33) DVDs that were put out for so many years. If you are worried that you are loosing part of the picture because of the "black bars" don't worry, you are not, you are getting the entire picture that was meant for you to be seen this way. If you are looking for flat screen (1.78 or 1.85) aspect ratio movies because you like your films to fill up the entire screen, blu-ray.com has a filter for that in its search function and one of our members has also started a thread that lists all the flat/full screen blu-rays currently available and he does his best to keep it up to date. Here is the link to the thread |
