Default Xbox 360 Replacement

Hi folks, I currently only use my 360 for streaming video from my PC. If I could find a Bluray player that would do that, I would toss the 360 and my Magnovox Profile 1 BD player in a second. I don't even need it to be wireless as I can connect it directly to my router.

Any suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Not directly... but there is a software solution that you can buy to stream Netflix from your PC to the PS3 called Play On. I believe it is $30. It works flawlessly for some, but can be hiccuppy for others. There are several BD players that do stream Netflix, but not that will also share files from your PC. Also, AFAIK, none of the blu-ray players that do stream Netflix will do so in HD like the 360.

No, it does not. The head of Netflix did recently say he wants Netflix to be on all 3 consoles, but who knows how far off that could be.

Ugh, this is not an easy decision. Have any of you used the PlayOn software to stream Netflix to the PS3? Is it pretty good if you don't need it to be HD?

I use PlayOn for Netflix streaming with my PS3. Overall I am happy with it, but it is not perfect. Sometimes a movie will not start properly on the first try or will pause momentarily while playing, but these issues do seem to be the exception rather than the norm. PlayOn also gives you streaming video from Hulu, CBS, YouTube, CNN, ESPN and a whole bunch of user-created plugins can be downloaded from playonplugins.com.

If Netflix streaming is your main concern for a player (beyond Blu-ray playback obviously), you might be better off with one of the Netflix-enabled standalones. However, if want versatility, a PS3 with PlayOn is difficult to top.

Now it looks like all those BD players you linked will stream media from PCs in addition to Netflix. Do they not stream xvid? They seem like a very good solution--except that I feel like for $300 I might get more bang for my buck from a PS3.

Currently the 360 is the best Media Extender available in this price range. Are you trying to do an all in one machine? Are you still interested in gaming? I had a PS3 and got rid of it. I never cared for the gaming on the PS3 when compared with the 360 and I much prefer my BDP-S550 for BD. Dont get me wrong the PS3 was a great machine I just did not get the value out of it. I was able to sell it and get the stand alone for less through Sonystyle during a sale. It is also nice that the 360 works with my Harmony remote and makes netflix just like I was watching a DVD.

I guess that's part of my problem...my fiance REALLY wants Netflix streaming but I'm just not using the 360 for gaming. I was hoping to consolidate by getting a BD player that could stream Netflix AND stream from my PC but I guess that's not possible. The PS3 would be ideal if I could be confident that the BD video quality was top-notch and PlayOn worked reliably for Netflix.

The more I look at the LG390, the more impressed I am by what it can do...but for that price I feel like I might as well get a PS3 Slim so I can play games if at some point in the future I want to?

The PS3 is a perfect BD player, and one that you don't hear much companing about when new movies come out that require firmware updates for stand alone players.
Sometimes when a new BD comes out, it requires a firmware update or a memory card (Crank 2) etc..
So you hear complaints from people while owners of the PS3 are playing the movie just fine.

You have to decide if Netflix is important or not and then make your purshase based on that. If you really want Netflix then the PS3 is out of the question for now without PlayOn.

I never tried PlayOn since we don't have Netflix here in Canada and I like going out to the store and rent a movie.

The BD quality with the PS3 is very good. At this price point it is on par with the rest. The DVD upscaling is not the best however. How about looking at the PS3 at 299.00 and then getting a Roku for netflix for 99.99 http://www.roku.com/home/ Or you could just keep the 360 for streaming since that would be free.

Side note: The LG 390 is currently at Amazon for 279.80.

I went ahead and bought a PS3--we'll see how PlayOn works. I may have to hardwire a PC near my entertainment center.

In my experience Playon was recognized without any problem and worked. Only hiccup, it wasn't working so hot over Wifi, so I'll have to make some kind of arrangement to have a hard line near the TV (I'm thinking Ethernet over powerline for now).
Otherwise, the PS3 is a stellar BR player (seems Criterion uses it for their reference player), and a very good DVD player/ upscaler. It also upscales Divx files nicely (no MKV support for now).
