I'm sure this has been asked before but i would like some fresh opinions. I'm looking at a new tv soon and my big question is what i should go with, Plasma or LCD. I'm looking between 52" and up .
The system has a PS3 hooked into thesystem and is our main tv we use in the house. I watch football as much as i can and love the PS3 also. I've heard the pros and cons of plasma/lcd as everyone else has. Would like some good opinions on this please. Thanks to all Big Ed |

firstly is your tv going to be located in a brightly lit room? if so LCD if not Plasma.
If most of your viewing at night or near dark room - then Plasma. Best Plasma if u can find one is the LX or M Pioneers excellent LCD is Sony XBR8. |

You are correct in one thing, though, there is no comparison. Plasma beats out LCD in ALL major picture quality categories. Every professional shoot-out rates plasma ahead of LCD. These are indisputable facts. You claim plasma won't be around as long as LCD. Based on what? Because Pioneer couldn't remain profitable selling high-end sets in an economic recession/depression? Or maybe it's because Vizio couldn't compete with their crappy sets against Panasonic/Samsung/LG? But in the end, what does it matter? Buy a high quality, top performing plasma today, and it will last you 8-10 years, minimum. Why would one care if, during that time, plasma was replaced by some newer technology? Would it automatically make your set unwatchable? Really, that's a pretty stupid reason (even though not true) to not go with plasma. |

both technologies are good. I have owned both LCD and Plasma. My personal preference is Plasma, and that basically is what it all boils down to....Personal Preference.
I prefer the more natural color pallet and deeper blacks of plasma, over the bright, rather unnatural colors that lcd produce. I will say that black levels on LCD have come on in leaps and bounds, but still are not as black as plasma levels. At the end of the day it all depends on what YOU prefer, not us, because all you will get here is everyone telling you Get an LCD, Get a Plasma, heck some with even tell you to go DLP. It all depends on whats right for you, and whats right for your living environment. Both have good and bad qualities, just get what will make you happy and then enjoy it! |

I'm all for the touchy-feely, warm, liberal attitude that says "buy what looks good to you"...but the bottom line is this - if you can find a new, boxed 52" LCD under $1000, it is going to look like shit. The same plasma (50", Panasonic, of course) is going to look fantastic. $ for $, plasma cannot be beat for picture quality...by a large margin...period. Opinions are fine...but when they get in the way of facts, there is no room for them. |

Wow, tough crowd. All I was giving was my opinion. Obviously all of you have degrees in Audio/Visual right? And as far as my Bose Acoustacrap, I paid far less than retail for it almost a steal at $499. To the poster who lives in Louisville, KY I won't be your neighbor for long as I am about to leave this crappy state!

Ouch angry people.
My thoughts are if you go with an LCD go with a Sony but the down side is their high end models are pretty expensive. For a plasma I would see if I could find a Pioneer Elite and if not a Panasonic G10 will be very good. Also Samsung is supposed to be making some great models in both LCD and Plasma flavors but I do not care for their brand as I have had bad luck with their products in the past. In the end I vote Plasma due to their more accurate picture. Good Luck! |

Most of the CONS you hear about plasmas is just FUD now a days.
Most of the PROS you hear about plasmas are truth. Dollar for dollar, I think a $1000 plasma will out perform a $1000 LCD. Since you don't mention a budget, it may be hard to say. Since you mention you are looking at 52" and up, I assume you are leaning towards LCD since that is a common size. Plasmas are typically 50", with a few at 54" showing up recently. I'm sure I'll slammed by someone, but IMO, here are my top choices. Plasma: - Panasonic - Pioneer (while they can still be found) LCD: - Samsung - Sony If you are budget conscious, then you may want to just save until you can afford a higher end model. Most of the Vizio, LG, Sharp, etc. models will leave you feeling less than satisfied. Some may argue that they use the same panels found on the higher-end sets, but that it where the similarities stop. they do not use the same processors or other higher quality components that will be found in the Sony, Panny, Sammy, or Pioneers. If you do buy a TV, make sure they have a VERY good return policy. Also, if you can swing it, buy two TV's (LCD and plasma) and return the one that you do not like. As others have said (I and have said to others), your viewing environment will decide what looks best. A Tv cannot be represented in a store how it will perform in your room. Good luck!! |
