India/Bollywood RVR - Telugu Movie Releasers!

This thread is for the discussion of current and future Blu-Rays from RVR.

The first one being Arundathi BD, they want to know what our expectations are as the end consumers from their Blu-Ray which is in the authoring phase now. The VP has promised to personally checkout our queries in this thread and will pass on valid points to his engineering team.

This is our chance to make sure we get a better product. So, please do pour in your ideas/expectations.

Cheers!

^ Nope, quality won't be affected. AFAIK, if the authoring costs goes up, the price will increase accordingly.

Nope the motive of the company is to provide you with un-compromised quality with the lowest pricing in the market and so you will find the rates low with our DVD-9 too!!

Thank you,

I have already posted a post with few links to know more about the company RVRi, its under review by moderators :-)

a few things about picture quality to keep in mind.

contrast

color saturation

color temperatures and skin tones

the amount of detail loss due to compression

a good bitrate, that doesnt compromise the quality of the film, while maintain the BD-50 limits

no edge enhancement for sharpness

maintain original aspect ratio

no digital noise reduction to remove film grain

if the movie has gone through a digital intermediate....use that as your source, rather than a 35mm masterprint.

hope that helps, and we really appreciate your effort to improve your quality through our feedback.

Thank you for bringing up the key points, Just FYI...the master source is DPX. Hope that gives you a clue on the output..

Thank you,
the fact that you are using the dpx from your DI should make your job easier.

but in the end...the DPX was derived from the original 35mm film...a lot also depends on how well the DOP can light a scene...and what kind of film stock can the budget support.

so, dont stress if your transfer doesnt look as pristine as transformers.

but if you could post a few screenshots, we might be able to help you point flaws, before you forward the movie for publishing.

A warm welcome to the forum RVR DVD. It is nice to see insiders on this forum.

Please check the points given in these posts and the links embedded in those posts. The information given in the links would surely help you to produce a good quality blu-ray. Mainly note the poll results and please comply with the trends set by the polls. Those are the directions taken by the major Hollywood studios.

We just received a Bluray version of the movie from the DPX conversion. This is still un-authored. I can definitely bring in the screen shots, I do not have a blu-ray drive so let me know if there are any other solutions for me to get you screen shots

Thank you,

The polls are helpful!! We did not do the grain removal, We will have to wait and see how this will impact the general audience(non technical). With the sound, we have 5.1 DD True Surround.

Glad to be in here!!

Thank you,

Thank you,
Thanks. How about the subtitles? Please ensure subtitles are universally compatible with all "current and future" display types.

Sony Pictures studio initiated a poll few months ago about subtitle positioning. This issue was intensely debated and the final outcome was to place the subs within the picture due to many important reasons. The HD subtitles should not be ugly and large like DVD subs. They should be slim-line well integrated HD subs (on 1920x1080 raster image). Since HD clarity, slim-line subs are readable (unlike SD DVD).

Based on the outcome of the poll, Sony Pictures has decided to plan for placing subtitles within the picture. It is the current practice of Hollywood giants Disney, Paramount, Lionsgate, MGM, Universal and Fox. It is expected for Warner to do the same.

Sivaji has well integrated nice-looking slim-line subtitles. It is a good example. You can check any Disney blu-ray to understand how subtitles are well integrated into the HD picture. It is hard to integrate subtitles in this manner on DVD since DVD resolution is low (DVD subs are on a 720x480 raster image as opposed to 1920x1080 on blu-ray).

Please check the links in my posts. They give pictures of new 21:9 (~2.35:1 aspect) super-wide TVs now shipping in Europe that cannot display blackbar subs simply because they do not show blackbars for Indian movies - so people cannot read subtitles! This is the case for CIH (constant image height) home theater projection systems - they also don't show the blackbars for the Indian movies, so black bar subs are chopped off and cannot be read.

Blackbar subs are not compatible with super-wide future display types and people will get into trouble with such blu-rays if they upgrade to a newer super-wide display system in a future date.

You see, old non-anamorphic DVD subs tailored for 4x3 displays cannot be read on 16x9 displays since 16x9 display chops off part of 4x3 display frame. Same would apply for the 16x9 blackbar subtitles when it is displayed on a 2.35:1 (or 21x9) display. This example gives us the message that the subtitles should be tailored to the movie rather than the display. Subtitles should be tailored for the movie aspect ratio (i.e. 2.35:1 for the Indian movies) rather than the 16x9 display.

Please discuss with your studios and make a policy decision on this matter.

True, it will be scope friendly Sub's....We decided on this purely from the input we got form a customer, or else, honestly we would have done regular sub's!!

Thank you,

Thank you,
Thanks RVR DVD. I value your transparency and glad to have you on this forum as an insider.

Is there any possibility to convey the latest direction in blu-ray subtitle placement (with reasoning as explained in various posts) to YRF, Eros and possibly to other Indian studios.

I have pasted few links for your easy reference:
