I have bought the Optimum release of Marienbad, along with some of their other titles in the same series. I also have the Criterion version of Marienbad.

I think the Studio Canal transfer of Marienbad, which Optimum have used, is really very good, although I have a very slight preference for the Criterion transfer. The framing on the Optimum disc is slightly tighter, although it's very marginal. Also, in one or two places, there is a bit of momentary brightness fluctuation on the Optimum version, whereas the Criterion has impressive stability. Both transfers retain a reasonable amount of grain. Anyway, I found very little to criticise on the Optimum transfer.

One area where the Optimum does score is in the subtitling. The font size is a bit smaller than the Criterion, and single-line subtitles and the second line of a two-line subtitle are positioned off-image down in the black bar area. On the Criterion, the subtitles are entirely over the image, which, together with the larger font size, makes them rather more obtrusive.

Ciao

I see Bruce has already left a very informative post, but, yes, I have the UK editions. Obviously, we would have screenshots with the review so you will be able to compare them to the Criterion ones we have.
