USA DVI to HDMI new to blu ray HELP!

Hi all.. new to blu ray here. I have a RCA D52W19 projection HDTV. I am waiting for Sony BDPs350 to arrive. I have a HDMI to DVI connector. will the sony play the blu ray discs ok on this tv? being that its a few years old? also will the blu ray image be dramatically different than the upconvert regular dvds we watch now? I am hoping for a DEFINITELY YES here!! when I see the blu ray images in the stores I cant believe how beautiful it is. if my old set up can come close to that we will LOVE IT!! thank you for your help!

I have a Toshiba 65" rear projection TV with a DVI output (I use a $5 HDMI-DVI adapter from Monoprice.com) and the BD images are brilliant, far superior to any DVD.

Make sure to turn off any DNR/noise reduction features on your TV, as it will blur your picture.

You have a CRT-based 1080i TV. CRT sets still give the best picture compared to plasma, DLP, or LCD. Make sure to set the BD player to output in 1080i.

I'm assuming you are plugging the HDMI cable directly into your TV via the DVI converter?

In that case, you need to decode the audio with the BD player as DVI cannot carry an audio stream in addition to video like HDMI can. The Sony S350 has analog outputs in 2.0 stereo that you can use, or digital coax/optical audio. The analog outputs will give you the full sound quality (called lossless audio, aka Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master audio or PCM/Uncompressed sound tracks) but will only have two channels. You can use a digital coaxial or optical output for full 5.1 sound but it will not be at the maximum quality that BD can offer. My player has 5.1 analog outputs that I attach to my audio receiver, and the video output is the HDMI cable that plugs into my TV's DVI output with the converter. I get to use my TV and still get the best sound quality.

If you have a newer receiver that has an HDMI input and can decode the new audio formats described above, plug the BD player into the receiver, and then plug the TV into the HDMI output of the receiver. Unfortunately most receivers may have issues with the DVI-HDMI converter so you may get video issues, but I can't say for sure.

Send me a private message (PM) if you have more questions.
