So what do I want to do - - I want to be able to archive/backup the AVCHD files from my camera, then have the capability to retrieve them later BACK to the computer in case I want to re-edit them into something (for now, I'm using Vegas movie studio platinum 9.0 as my editor).

any help appreciated
Any Camera you hook up to a USB port will show up as a device.
click start, then click on, Computer, look for the camera in the device window.
then keep clicking on all folders until you find your *.m2ts file
then drag and drop it to your Hard drive.
