there were people attempting to sell thier pre-orders a few days back and there were a few legit looking auctions going upwards of $1800-$2400 with 5-6 days left...

I'm expecting to make about $1000 profit, If I don't at least make $600, on them, then I will keep one of them.

Don't be fooled though. I have no doubt that some of those auctions were bogus. People purposely bidding up the price with no intention whatsoever of actually paying at the close of auction.

Yeah, I know some of them were, but quite a few of them had high bidders with really high and good feedback... I doubt they would ruin their reputation to screw up some guys auction.

Interesting.

Well, I haven't even been able to confirm a pre-order yet, so I am just trying to get one for myself, never mind having an extra one to sell on eBay.

This kind of exploitation of a new console is disgusting. It's not even in the spirit of ebay.

I hope Sony and ebay meet to discuss the potential problem, I appreciate there is nothing technically illegal going on, but it is totally unfair for someone to cash in on the interest in PS3 by snapping one up, with no intention of even opening the box, but simply to sell it for a profit. Hateful. I don't know how these people sleep.

The paying public should simply ignore these ebay sales. But isn't it a joke that the main criticism the PS3 gets is its price; and yet some idiots out there are likely to pay nearly twice the price if they get on via ebay! Let's hope sony get the console production up to speed quickly and not repeat Microsofts disasterous delays.

Not even in the spirity of ebay? What exactly is the "spirit" of ebay. I thought it was a website that has auctions where people bid on items they want. Kinda the free market system at work. How is selling a PS3 on ebay any different than anything else?

Good lord, I hope you are kidding. "Hateful"? Give me a break. Unfair for someone to cash in? How so? Nobody is forcing anybody to pay a single dime for a PS3 on ebay. The PS3's on ebay will sell for exactly what the market will bear. It's all about supply and demand. And I guarantee you that people who sell PS3's for a profit on ebay will sleep quite well. I know I would if I made good money doing so!

And what do you want Sony and ebay to discuss regarding the "potential problem"? If ebay doesn't allow PS3 auctions, do you realize that it would probably just drive the prices up even further since they would be that much more difficult to get? There are always other places that would allow auctions of the PS3 anyway.

So why are you so critical of the practice? You are calling people who will sell the PS3 on ebay "hateful" and you "don't know how they sleep at night", yet here you say people that will buy them are "idiots". And I personally might agree with that, but my priorities and your priorities may not match other peoples priorities. It's all about supply and demand. Supply will be very limited compared to the demand. Thus you will have profit takers selling the PS3 on ebay, with some buyers extremely happy for the opportunity to get one, even at more than double the MSRP.

Welcome to free market and capitialism.

No one has a gun to anyone else's head to force them to get into impulse buying bidding wars.

They do it to themselves every time.

Don't like it? Don't bid on it.

Barring an occasional criminal exception: Most of the people selling PS3's paid for them upfront, out of their own pocket. So Sony got their money on those units one way or the other just like Microsoft and the Xbox360 a year ago.
