Well, I'm done with my work for the night so I'm going to sleep now. Sorry for the off-topic posts and thanks for the company, you're all great. I don't think I've ever had this much fun working this shift.

If this is true... and I have my doubts, it would explain the puzzling New Line Entertainment decision to release Rush Hour 3 and Hairspray on Blu-ray only this year. It also would explain the nearly euphoric statements made by WHV president Ron Sanders, "…We have 60 titles released in Blu-ray and we'll be cranking that up further. We're thrilled at how well they’ve been doing." Unfortunately, I won't be anywhere near a computer at 10 am.

But my hope can best be illustrated in this way:

Right on. I apologize to anyone who was the least bit offended. I'm afraid that sometimes my humor is not in line with the majority. Never understood the whole pc movement. I should've gone to sleep hours ago. Perhaps now would be a good time.

But those aren't directly related to bit-rate. In the case of banding, they could only hide that by selectively dithering transitions between colours. I talked to the guys at SPHE and they said they expirement with this sort of thing on all-CG movies.

As for the softness on the other two, that's most likely down to the way the film was shot OR filtering to meet a target bit-rate - but not a direct consequence of using a lower bit-rate.
None of the discs were at all bad...in fact I consider Happy Feet to be true reference material .

Like you said, these could be very well issues with the masters that no amount of encoding mastery can "fix".

This also brings up the issue of hi-def releases showing more "grain" then their softer standard-definition counterparts. People who expect a sharp, shiny presentation will cry foul and mistake the grain for "compression noise", when the grain is actually inherent to the master (300 comes to mind).

Still, I think that their simply MUST be a benefit to having higher bit-rates on future releases...for me, inching closer to a "perfect" representation of the master and general peace of mind are good enough reasons for me .

Once this "rumor" is debunked can we delete this entire thread...

Only positive I have seen about this is Penton saying there were discussions. The fact that this could happen is interesting as it seems(ed) so far out of the realm of possibility.

Still..don't believe it will happen today.

Absolutely nothing wrong with being pessimistic, you never hear a pessimist say "darn, I really thought it would work out" Rather, pessimists are more often than not pleasantly surprised.

An Optimist says: "The glass is half full"
A Pessimist says: "The glass is half empty"
An Engineer says: "The damn thing is 100% over-designed"

Ok in Australia the national sport is Aussie Rules Football aka AFL (Australian Football League) its a cross between rugby, soccer, no body armour or anything like that.

Anyway the grandfinal is this saturday and my town (Geelong) and Port Adelaide are playing in the grand final.

Geelong is playing its first grand final in about 12 years or so and hasn't won a grand final since 1963, so it's a pretty big thing if they win.
