Not easy to pick. Some of my personal favorite on this list were Bogart, Stewart, Fonda....

But the question is the one considered the best, I went with Spencer Tracy, many time over look because he did not look like much but he was a very gifted actor however.

for me personally i have to say Tom Hanks! Such a versatile actor. He has played just about every part imaginable and apart from maybe one movie that bombed (lady killers), every other movie he has been in has been amazing.

I went with Jack Nicholson...I wish we could have chosen multiple actors though. Very hard to choose one.

Agreed...I think he is def one of the best modern actors, without a doubt, but not the best ever.

While I love Clint Eastwood, 8 votes? Really? Can't believe this is even being debated. Daniel Day Lewis. Period. The man should win the Oscar every single time he steps in front of a camera. He gives a beyond amazing peformance every single time. There is no other actor on that list who comes close because they all have mailed it in and delivered some awful movies while Day Lewis never and will never. I love Pacino but he made Gigli and Simone and he stopped acting about 10 years ago. Brando was probably the all time best talent but he threw it away time and time again. Cage has a vote wow lol.

Doing bad movies doesn't make someone less of an actor.

I wouldn't average their acting performances across their entire resume of movies, because they have their reasons for choosing the movies they did. All I'd consider is their ability to act, if/when they chose to show it off.

If I did three, I'd probably do Brando, Olivier, Day-Lewis.

I'm surprised Jimmy Stewart has as many votes as he has. He's my favorite actor, but I think he mostly just plays himself, the way John Wayne once joked that the only acting he does is to "act like John Wayne".

I wish the votes were made public, so I could learn whose opinions to never consider on this site anymore (like the person who picked Nicholas Cage).

that's what makes having a poll or thread with the word "best" in the title virtually pointless--everyone just picks their favorite anyways. "Best" means objective, not subjective. The person who picked Cage or those that picked Denzel prob did so because they love those particular actors, or because they haven't seen some of the masters on the list. That is my only explanation.

I agree and I guess I was a little bit optimistic that the people on here would pick with their brains...I only inlcuded those actors because I know people like them and to not have to listen to them ***** over and over

Oh, I completely understand your intention. If you did not include them, people would complain. There is no doubt they are fine actors, just not in the discussion of the best ever. Unfortunately, some ppl just refuse to apply objectivity sometimes.

U explain how how he isnt! First off I havnt seen much if any at all of the 3 u named and Im sure other people are in the same boat so obviously we choose who is the best that we have ever seen. In my eyes Denzel is the greatest actor I have ever seen. Got Em!!
