I don't see them going for $100+ or anything like that anytime soon! They won't be as rare as the 1st pressing of Salo! How long do you give it before Ebay gets flooded with expensive copies of The Third Man? I remember in Aug, Amazon was selling this at the amazing price of 15.99 brand new, some of us had this in our gold box for 15.19!

I got mine from Amazon back in Aug when they had it in my Gold Box for $15.19! Mine is the cardboard case version and I really dont care about that, I got a stellar copy of an all-time classic!

I just ordered a copy yesterday on Amazon and I hop my copy is in the cardboard case, but I'm sure it's going to be in a new plastic one.

You know what I would love on Criterion BD is The Unbearable Lightness of Being. I have the Criterion DVD. Still consider this to be Daniel Day-Lewis' greatest performance and Milan Kundera's greatest novel.

I would guess that in all honesty since BD is so new to many consumers, my guess is there aren't a ton of BD copies out there... certainly a lot of standard DVD versions out there.. but BD is far more limited.

Time will tell.

WB's now owns that title they even released a two disc special edition if I am not mistaken (might have been just one disc)

but your DVD has some value for sure. That is one of the few OOP DVDs I don't own. I have Sid & Nancy and This is Spinal Tap among other Criterion DVDs that are OOP.

I even own the super rare Little Shop of Horrors WB release that was yanked in about less than a week of release (contains alt ending that rumor has it David Geffen didn't approve for release)

Does anyone know which Criterion releases are most likely to get the BD treatment in the near future? I'm looking forward to the B&N sale and want to pick up some titles aside from the Third Man, but wanna steer clear from any DVD titles that might come out on BD within the next year.

I figure holding off on Lang's M or any of the Kurosawa titles since those would be obvious choices, but what about titles like VAMPYR or THIEF OF BAGDAD? I already own TOB as a burned disc, but absolutely love the movie and wouldn't mind showing my support by buying the DVD. The only trouble is that the film would look breathtaking in 1080p, so I'd hate myself for buying it only to have a BD come out the next 6 months.

I would not chance thinking Barnes will have any copies of The Third Man Blul by the time that sale starts. If amazon.com is out Barnes will follow. I would NOT chance it.

My thoughts on the plastic case replacements in concern to the issue of the The Third Man becoming OOP.

I would guess Criterion can make as many replacements for consumers as they see fit, just not the disc. That way most people who find out about the replacement cases can have a chance to get one.

I would imagine they can legally do so with the basic issue of them replacing what they can deem inefficient and or defective.

I would imagine they will want enough cases ready for when they decide to sell them all at once. I think those who want one will be fine for the time being.

All of the B&N still have it in stock. I went to one last night and they still had the cardboard case version. Not sure if I'm paranoid enough to run out and pay 41 bucks for it just yet.

Yeah...well...the bad quality was intentional, I swear! That's what gives them that "definitive proof" look.

In all seriousness, I was in a room with no lighting at the time and it was overcast outside. Also, the Amazon plastic wrap kept freaking out the auto-focus on my camera.

B&N will usually hold for a few days (if you ask explicitly and maybe provide a pick-up date), but they can and will refuse to if an item is in high demand, and it's incredibly unlikely that, even if they did offer to hold it through November 10th, they would allow you to purchase it at 50% off.

Knowing Criterion and OOP titles, if you even think you want The Third Man, find it and buy it new, NOW, for the lowest possible price. Even if you hate it and want to get rid of your copy (unlikely), you could easily get $20 for a mint viewed copy in a few weeks.
