Default Building a riser. First time diy.

I uploaded a couple pics of where I want the riser to be. I have planned to build it using 2x12 wood. For the step I will use a 2x6, or just cut the 2x12 where I need to. I am planning to get new seats for the front next year, thus the project, so people can see the tv from the couch. Those front seats have seen better days. Too much jumping on them. lol.
The whole riser will come up to the 3 wall sides, so I can move the couch on one side for holiday time. The approx area will be 139"x64" I will be adding carpet to it as well as close as I can get to my current color. Haven't decided to do it myself or not. Need to research prices on that.
For the insulation I have seen some people put pillows in there. Would that be better then normal insulation? Opinions needed. Thanks.

My costs for the riser.
R30 Insulation:2@6.56 each
Safety Kit for Insulation:1@6.87
2x8x8 Wood:6@4.68 each
2x12x12 Wood:3@12.35 each
2X12X8 Wood:1@8.23
19/32x4x8 Plywood:3 OSB Rated@9.97 each
Screws:1 box 2" Gold Screw@5.94
Carpet:12'x9'@85.56
Padding:6x9 2@32.67
Installation:75.00

Total=Around $355

I just checked out your Gallery - Man I love those lightsabers!

IMO, doing it yourself is the way to go. I would say if you have the tools and the physical means (even if it's your first time) do it! Building the riser sounds pretty straight forward, not easy, but it is relatively risk-free (no walls need to be torn down or electrical work).

I would go with insulation from Home Depot or Lowes and not go the pillow route. Since it will be sitting on the floor, I would rather have true insulation get wet by accident, than pillows. The layout I see in your gallery looks good. I like how the riser will be surrounded by walls or partial walls, it should look good.

Do the research, think it through from start to finish, draw it out on paper with measurements if possible and then just do it! Good Luck and keep us posted.

I apologize that this question isnt entirely related to your topic, but Your placement seems a bit peculiar to me. Obviously everyone has different tastes and priorities but im curious as to why you set up your theater where you have it, as apposed to the wall where your posters are, or even the nook where the couch is. Just wondering

Well, the room is longer the way I have it set up, 12'x17'. I always wanted to build a riser for 2 rows of seating, so I had to put my seating at the window because where the tv is is my front door to my house right there, and the door by my speaker is where my food is. No good sized couch would fit there. Plus if I were to put my tv and stuff by the window, then when my front door is opened, people could see it and we don't want any temptation from the outside.
I did put a ton of thought into my placement even before I bought this house. Although a separate room would have been nice instead of the living room, its all I could afford at the time, and its worked out great for me so far.

I feel the same way. I'm glad that I blind bought it, too.

A little too violent for the kids though. Transformers 1 & 2 were better for them.

Infrared,

Fantastic work! Once the carpet is put on, it is going to look awesome! I suggest adding rope lights and plug them right into the outlet!
