I believe the actual film is encoded in 1080i/50, so it would not be region-A friendly, despite technically being region free.

True and that's been confirmed by numerous users here and at AVS.

Would someone be kind enough to supply the name of software application/s that I can use on my PC, to determine the technical details of the video of the Pulp Fiction Blu-Ray release I've purchased. I was planing on getting a Blu-Ray reader/drive for my PC anyway. I'm sure it will be useful.

The blu-ray is in 1080i (not mentioned on the box though), plays fine with PS3.
However, it took me a while to figure out why my PS3 downscales output to 576p (my JVC-hd100 supports all resolutions). Same was happenning to some of the BBC wildlife series (Nature Great Events and Wild China, this one was downscaled even to 480p).

I was really confused since the actual resolution was not marked on neither of those BDs' packages.

It's a bit offtopic, but it took me couple of hours of googling and playing with settings to figure out what was wrong: in PS3 settings go to Display (not Video) settings, choose Custom and tick all supported resolutions for your display (not just 1080p). Obviously, when this setting is done automatically, it won't mark all options.

All those discs perfectly play in 1080i now.

Not only the main feature, but all content on the disc (menus etc) is apparently 1080i50. Fail.
