I'm not so sure about the other Onkyo models, although it seems as though the NR-807 measurements are a misprint, but I know the 805 benched within a few watts of its stated power. If it didn't, then I would be screwed with my low impedance speakers at the levels I play.

I was only commenting on the way the spec is presented, which is the same for all Onkyo receivers I've looked at (but I haven't looked at them all). My previous statement only concerns the printed spec, and not the actual performance of the receiver.

Here's a clue to why the 807's not benching nearly as well as the 805: The 805 weighed 50.9 pounds. The 807 weighs 39.7 pounds. When you consider that the primary source of weight in a receiver is typically the transformer for the amp section, go figure that the 807 doesn't live up to the 805's legacy. The 805 was really kind of a fluke, considering its cost vs. performance. The closest thing they have to it now is the TX-NR1007. Not sure what the 1007 benches like, but I can tell you that mine blows away the 705 I had before it.

HT Labs Measures
Five channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
0.1% distortion at 105.5 watts
1% distortion at 122.0 watts

Seven channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
0.1% distortion at 29.9 watts
1% distortion at 33.0 watts
One thing I don't understand (assuming the above is correct):
Let's say you're setup for seven channels and the extra two channels are used for rear surrounds.

You're playing a movie and there's nothing coming through the rears.

A few seconds later there's a big effect coming through the rear surrounds, but there's still music pushing through the L and R, dialog through the center, and other effects through the side surrounds. Assuming that at the moment of that change, the receiver is pushing more that 30 watts, does the distortion suddenly jump drastically because the receiver can only put out 22.9 watts at 0.1% if all channels are driven???

Whatever happened to discrete amplification, even in receivers?

Question

Maybe I'm missing something here, but Pioneer's SC-25/27 both weigh about only 40lbs too. Yet the specs say 140Wx7ch with 7ch driven. How can Pioneer be the same weight as Onkyo, yet have continuous 140Wx7ch?

Yes but it could also have something to do with the fact all the new pioneers are being run with icepower.

That is a big reason....the ICE amps are extremely efficient, and thus no need to weigh a ton to get the job done.

Yeah..30 watts into 7 channels completely turned me off to Onkyo, especially with all the reports of their receivers getting unduly hot. I'm going with Pioneer. The other problem I have with Onkyo is no digital audio outs.
