Robert Harris should be the final word on anything like this. The man is an artist when it comes to making sure the director's intent is maintained

I see even Bob’s gotten involved in this issue.
Tell him to get off the internet and get back to work !

How does it work and how do i know what version to buy? (If i was interested in the movie)
Some loong detailed rant on this issue would be apreciated
Okay, here's another bizzaro suggestion:

What if the region coding had a time limit? That is, suppose both the region and an expiration date was encoded in the disk. Then suppose that a BD player, that was connected to the internet so it could reach a trusted time/date source, would then disregard the region coding if it had expired.

Any takers?

What is Mr. Harris currently working on?

Sorry if I've missed this previously.

Re: Close Encounters

Does the DVD have all 3 on 1 disc as well? If so, will the seamless branching be noticeably *better* on BD than on the DVD?

Robert Harris states noone can replicate film on video, and given his knowledge on this subject, I would have to agree. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't aim for reproductions that are as close to the final print/DI in the top-end theatres.

I'm actually curious about what people's experience with movies like Alexander is. I keep looking at Alexander and wonder why it looks to be so clean without film grain. This movie was shot on film, yet where is the grain?

And while Alexander unquestionably looks better than Troy, it still looks a bit soft, doesn't it? Any connection, I wonder?

Sorry, Neo.
I haven’t seen this feature either in the theatre or on Hi-Def optical disc, also I have no knowledge of its history.

imdb has Alexander on DI. That would indicate a cleaner master, but it's hard to believe that film grain is virtually gone even with a clean DI master.

Can any insider confirm whether Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer and The Day After Tomorrow have BD+?

Well Esox when it comes to vampires, vamps and such I try to keep my priorities straight in life, so I’ve been working on getting a VIP pass to the Halloween party at the Playboy Mansion staring the “Kandy girls”.

I got it and tried to post a pic but it seems like the file is too big or what not…..I’m pretty much computer illiterate and always need Deci to post pics for me.

Anyway, you may see me on one of dem shows like EXTRA or Entertainment Tonight if they cover it.
Watch for the guy with the limp (third leg).

We know this insider to be a straight shooter, and the continued posting of "amatuer" reviews to prove a point is ridiculous. Even more ridiculous is posting pictures of a 14 year old Laserdisc as a reference because it has a sticker with Coppola's name on it.

At the end of the day, people have the right to agree/diasgree with the the "quality" of the ITENDED presentation on Dracula. But if one doesn't like it, it's NOT right to go on a witch-hunt because it "doesn't look the way it's looked in the past" and serves no purpose (especially almost a week after this issue was raised and responded to).
Esox, I’m not going to put my neck on the line and defend any bad work no matter what the studio………. just because it comes out on Blu-ray.

If you search into the archives on AVM$ under my name and The Fifth Element (or TFE or some shortened variant of that) you should find a post where I mentioned that I was or had already ? approached the *powers that be* at SPE to encourage them to redo that particular title and issue a remastered edition. The hell if I would say that if I thought the first release was acceptable to savvy home theater enthusiasts.

You’ll find the same sort of thing somewhere in the archives on AVM$ with paidgeek (before any announcement of a remastered version) where he says something to the effect that the work could have been better and that there was a flaw in the production process of that particular title. He didn’t try to hide any misstep at all.

The work done on this project was as good as could have been by anyone…..anytime.
Nobody dropped the ball here.

I see even Robert Harris has chimed in. Long-term internet junkies know for a fact that in the past on balance he has been far more negative toward Sony Pictures rather than positive (so there’s no inherent pro-Sony bias there) which I believe has been due to the Sony bureaucracy and budgetary constraints rather than any differences in philosophical viewpoints. But I guess if some people care to question even his judgment regarding transfers, then they’re all entitled to their own opinion……….which is why he does what he does for a living, and they do what they do to bring home the bacon.

I'm glad Robert has chimed in on this, but for me, all it took was for Paidgeek and Penton Man to lay down the facts and that was good enough

That seems to be the entire argument: brightness. The DVD is way over saturated, and the LD was way too "pretty". Every pic posted that is supposed to show how "bad" the BD is, shows how GREAT it is, IMHO.

It's an artform. And sometimes artists aren't appreciated in their time. This release will grow in stature with time, and become a reference against which other restorations are measured.

It's a shame when pop sensibilities overshadow the art.

I watched parts of Dracula and Halloween tonight. I had close to the same reaction as Robert Harris did, although I am not equating myself with him. The film looks the way I remember seeing it projected. If you look at most of the outdoor daylight scenes, colors are rendered very well. I was actually more thrown with Halloween. It almost looked to sharp. Maybe that is the color timing issue, maybe it isn't. Either way, I came away thinking Dracula preserved the look of the film better.
