The movies don't assume anything else is canon but the movies. Books take movies as canon, but the movies supercede everything else on the canon scale. Even The Clone Wars is canon before all extended universe material I think. I think even the previous Clone Wars cartoon from Tartakovsky takes canon precedence over extended universe.

I personally don't worry about any of the book material, due to having read almost none of it and considering many of the ideas to be absurd and undermine the message of the films (Palpatine clones!).

Star Wars The Force Unleashed and Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire are both considered "movie cannon".

Can you cite a source on that? Just because an extended universe story doesn't contradict canon doesn't mean it IS canon. It has to either be one of the live action films (including the script or novelization of said live action film) or Word of God from Lucas himself to be that level of canon.

The only thing I'd really change is replacing Darth Maul with Lando (in place of Judas as the traitor) and Mace Windu with Wedge (just 'cuz he was the only rebel to survive every battle in the OT... aside from Luke and Leia and those others).

Good god.

There's no such thing as canon or not canon.

It's. All. Fiction.

You might want to lay off worshiping Lucas as a god, it tends to make him angry, and you wouldn't like him when he's angry.

Actually, the scary thing is... Lucas Licensing has a database to track canon. It's called the Holocron.

Wikipedia entry on Star Wars canon

Canon in the Star Wars universe apparently is a big thing. When a book is written with a major character death, they have to have approval from George Lucas to be able to do it.

Me, I think it's all pretty much hogwash, I agree that it's all fiction to be enjoyed/ignored at will.

Whether a literary work is fiction or non-fiction has nothing to do with it being considered canon. By definition, canon just means it is considered gospel (official/lore/authorized/genuine) by the IP holder(s). The Tales of Beedle the Bard is official Harry Potter canon. Likewise, in the SW universe, it's canon if George says it is.

That said, after all the discussion in this thread, I re-watched Eps. I, II and III this weekend and have a new appreciation for them. At times, the direction is mediocre and the acting is wooden (nothing can change that), and Jar-Jar is still annoying, but overall the prequels are more enjoyable now that I understand more about Sidious and his schemes.

I lived down the block from ILM and served George A number of times in a restaurant I managed. From what the people at ILM said and from what I saw, he is very humble but very dedicated to his ideas. The success of Star Wars (a new hope) gave him the money to pursue his dreams, thats all.

You know what I just thought about? What was it like in a time before us humans have even discovered such stars, such aliens. What if you were to make the first non science fiction Star Wars movie (well not really), how about when we were to go towards our goals to space, but figure out how we were able to get to space, the man who lead humanity to "boldly go where no man has gone before" (sorry if I quoted star trek) as to say. How we found the "force". Maybe we were the first species to become jedi in the entire universe, long before any species in any planet has performed, we have given them knowledge of the force.

I would like to see a star wars film about the beginning of mankind direction toward the "final fronteir" (think 2001, and again, sorry for another star trek quote). It's just a thought.

Every article about the game pre-release day was talking about how it was 1 of only 2 Star Wars games that were cannon, not to mention George Lucas personally oversaw the game, including the story.

I remember Game Informer saying Shadows of the Empire was also canon

It's somewhere in the star wars wiki

Notice that I didn't capitalize the word "canon". I'm not referring to a religious scripture or something. I use the word to identify which fictional elements are compatible with each other and which level of compatibility exists between them, and which takes precedence in cases of conflicting information.

You'll find that this use of the word is common when referring to these sorts of things, particularly when a single fictional story evolves into a full universe of other things. Things which "happened" in the universe are considered canon, things which definitely did not are considered non-canon (like, for example, a "What If" story where Darth Vader killed Luke instead of the Emperor). Things which were later revised and decided that they no longer happened after-the-fact are retcons.

ps the Wookieepedia is blocked at work, so I can't check on it now, but I'll do the legwork to prove or disprove what you guys are saying about these stories place in canon. I think the fact that The Clone Wars isn't even on the same level of canon as the movies indicates that these games likely aren't either. For me, if it's not one of the six films, it didn't happen, and I see The Clone Wars as almost an alternate what-if kind of thing. It's entertaining but I don't see any insight on the six true films from this animated show.

Yeah...I haven't done mine in a year so I am way overdue! Looking forward to it though. Do you upcovert it or just go old school dvd player? I usually change it up sometimes I got 4,5,6,1,2,3 this time I'm going 1-6. I'll finish it off with Empire of Dreams..such an interesting documentary.

I play them in my Sony BDP-S360. I had a thread going back in April about how 4-5-6 look much sharper in upconversion then 1-2 but 3 being the best looking one IMO.

I usulay play them 1-6 but I suppose if I ever were to watch them with someone who as never seem them I would go 4-5-6-1-2-3 just so to keep the surprises intact.

I cannot wait for my first Star Wars BD weekend marathon, that will be 2 words for you

I am hoping for the best but expecting the worst. Obviously I would love that the eventual BD release would include both the SEs and the original versions of the OT. Even better, if you could choose which parts of the OT you'd watch in the original version and which scenes you'd like to pick from the SEs. But realistically I don't expect that to happen.

Even if only the SE versions of the OT are released, it'll still be a blast, tho.
