(in millions)

Can you believe it? This is the 360's 48th month on the market and the Wii and PS3's 36th month.

PS2 19,010,000 (36 months) (September 2003)
PS2 24,882,000 (48 months) (September 2004)

Xbox - 9,961,402 (36 months) (October 2004)
Xbox - 12,870,000 (48 months) (October 2005)

GCN - 8,003,241 (36 months) (October 2004)
GCN - 11,382,000 (48 months) (October 2005)

360 11,421,000 (36 months) (October 2008)
360 16,501,486 (48 months) (October 2009)

PS3 9,058,296 (36 months) (October 2009)

Wii 22,064,881 (36 months) (October 2009)
considering ps3 $600 price point when launched and they are 'only' 2mill behind 360 at 36 month pace is a fabulous trend for ps3!!!

and think about how many people have bought 2-3 xbox 360s cause of the RROD

3)I can see that being a reason. but people who want MW2 already have a 360 ( yeah yeah i know this cliche is always used for both consoles, but its true.) that bundle is going to be bought buy mostly the HCG's who already have a 360 and always collect LE items.

Honestly though, it can go ether way, i dont know who's going to take november.

(well we all know the wii will be #1)

Thanks for the LTD's tox.

So if your account gets banned on a 360, does that make the system unusable online or something? Can't you just open a new account?

The bad news is that we're still losing in the war. We need a great marketing strategy that will help boost our sales and units and help us overtake the 360.

They have different types of bans. If you're trolling online or something, it's just your Gamertag that gets banned (no refunds). For console modification, they ban the box's MAC address so that it can never get onto Xbox LIVE ever again.

Only 1 of the great classic franchises of the PS3 have been released yet (MGS4).

2010 will probably define how this gen will end

In america thats more difficult, but WW the PS3 seems to do much better than the 360.

I think its always been outselling it for awhile now.

Yep, they seem to be just banning the hardware in this instance. If you get a new 360, you can go ahead with your original Gamertag. Likely this is cover to account for the "I bought my 360 used and didn't know it was modded" defendants out there.

Stupid comments from Activision aside, it really doesn't matter if the PS3 catches up to the 360. The 360 has too large of a base for the companies who are going multi-platform to stop, and it's not like there are a lot of companies making high-profile 360 only games.

Activision's comments look even worse now that MW2 sold way better than they were expecting, bringing the small number of servers they got to their knees.

That's exactly what I was thinking. PS3 is winning WW. Also, I personally am not losing anything. LOTS of great games are coming to the PS3 constantly, so I win!

So only those who modded their 360 got banned eh? Well good on MS then!

But there's only 1 more to come in Gran Turismo. And who knows when they'l finally get round to releasing it. There's GOW3 but they only sold about 2 million on PS2 so really a second tier franchise sales wise not game wise.

This is true, whether the PS3 passes the 360 in the U.S or WW, or even if the 360 pulls ahead further, none of the big AAA 3rd party games are ever going to be exclusive anymore.

This is where sony's first party exclusives come in.

I'm telling you, it's not going to be about winning - this generation is going to end up being more about reaching parity and then who has the easier time springboarding into next generation and when they actually do it.

Personally my money is on Sony there. The Cell structure was a risky move, but one I bet pays very big dividends in the next 3-5 years.

And there's another discussion. Sonys first party games dont sell consoles or even sell that great at all other than Gran Turismo.

I think if Sony sticks with Cell architecture going forward into the next generation, it will be fine. But I do think that if the PS4 drops another new, novel hardware spec on developers while the competition sticks to its PC-in-a-box approach, then some of the oft-publicized struggles of the PS3 will return again. I would also expect to see a lot more and better integration across PS, PSP, and PSN services on the whole--which if done right could be a great seller all around.

I would suggest that this might be the wrong way to look at it. Sony's approach has never seemed one that places success or failure on this title or that title. Rather, it's about building a library of games--both exclusive and multi-plat. I think that is a key component of their 10-year strategy--that ultimately they will offer a accessibly-priced console that is supported by a massive pool of games--many being exclusive. The PS1 and PS2 did that, and I think the PS3 will certainly get there as well. And even though Sony probably has its most capable, direct competiton right now in M$, a lot of the gaming press is very focused on the short-term and really misses, I think, what Sony is actually looking to accomplish.

I think thats because sony doesn't have, or focus on just one game being a massive success like MS does with halo. they have to much variety to do that. they can, but they dont want to, and im happy about that. i'll take 5 new new ip's than 5 new sequels. i mean damn, halo reach will be the 6th halo in the series. expect many many more.

GoW is def a big franchise (2.44million units sold for GoW2), and so is Final Fantasy.
Of course FF XIII will not be exclusive, but something tells me that the PS3 version will comfortably outsell the 360 one...

In fact if I were Sony I'd pull all the stops to promote FF XIII in the US, but I guess they will also have GoW3 to push...

i think something people are overlooking is that the PS3 has a whole new market to tap this xmas. Until now, a kid has been very unlikely to get a $/€400 console as a xmas gift. down at 300 thats just become a viable option for a whole bunch of parents. Its a position that the PS3 has never been in and so has never seen the kind of xmas sales spikes that the 360 or wii has had.

Nov and Dec NPDs sure are going to be fun!

Yeah I think that for the kid market and as far as new releases go, Ratchet & Clank ACiT, Eyepet and Buzz World Quiz beat the heck out of MW2 & Left4Dead2

Future will tell
