Here's a review of GMK from Dr. Kain over at HDD.....
Quote:
Video - 3/5:
I have to say, I am a bit disappointed with the video. It is definitely a considerable upgrade over the DVD Sony had released in the States a few years ago, but most of the scenes that do not feature the monsters look just a tad better (if at all) to the Region 2 DVD Toho released in 2002. Sure, the details are much sharper during the monster battles, especially towards the end of the movie, but the day time scenes are hardly any better. I am not sure why, maybe it was how it was filmed, but being that this is my favorite Godzilla movie of all time, I was expecting it to look just as sharp as Star Trek or The Dark Knight. Instead, I am a bit disappointed. However, that by no means this is not worth the upgrade, as it still is, just not as much as I had hoped.
Audio - 5/5:
Now we are talking. The audio is just simply incredible, as there are always things coming out of each speaker. Dialog is very clear and rich, with a heavy use of the subwoover every time a monster stomps, roars, growls, etc. In fact, the scene when Godzilla uses his breath that creates the mushroom cloud the teacher sees felt like the entire apartment shook. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the dialog at all, as no matter what, you hear the dialog right through anything that is happening on screen.
Extras - 5/5:
Everything from the original Region 2 3 disc DVD set has been ported over, with the highlights of the features being the two hour long making of feature.
NOTE: The extras once again cannot be accessed on the Samsung 3600. I have no idea why not, and why the firmware update a few weeks ago has not fixed this issue, but this player is really starting to get on my nerves. It won't play the extras on these discs, the player cannot play Up and Monster's Inc without constantly freezing, and some movies won't even load at all on it.
Overall:
While the video quality is not what I expected it to be, it is far from bad, however, it is the audio here that truly steals the show, and anyone who loves this movie owes it to themselves to pick up such a fantastic release. The audio will not disappoint anyway, except your neighbors because they will have no rest for the 103 minutes this movie plays through. Enjoy it, show it to you friends, and then watch it again.
