I have a question I hope someone can help me with...


I know this thread is about Blu-Ray packaging and not DVD, but I'm looking for a particular type of DVD case, and I'm hoping someone here may know something.

Fox has more recently taken some of their TV DVD season box sets that have been out for some time (like the Buffy, Angel, and the X-Files), and reissued them in DVD cases that are the same size as a normal DVD movie case, but inside are designed to hold 6 discs (each side of the inside of the case holds a disc, and then there are 2 "pages" each of which hold 2 discs... so it holds 6 in total). I picked up a few X-Files seasons today at Wal-Mart (the only one I've ever owned is the first season, which I got as a gift back when each set cost about $100) because they had them for $14 each, which is a good price, and I really like the cases that they come in.

I want to reduce some space on my shelves. I have all of the Buffy/Angel sets in their original, larger packaging since I got them pretty much as they came out. If I can find cases like these, I will just print up the artwork for the thinner cases and put them in there.

If anyone knows if I can buy these cases somewhere, I would appreciate any info that you may have.

My Monsters Inc came in that type of case, however for some reason my Up came in an Elite style 4 disc case (though they are both about the same thickness).

However, that line of cases is the type most often used by Disney, so yes, that should be what you are looking for.

My order of 100 Viva Elite cases came in this week. They are the standard size ones that are 12.5mm thick, even though the specs said 6mm when I ordered. I am very happy with the condition, no broken or scratched up ones.

Time to replace about 30 cases that the top of the spine broke off, leaving that tiny little annoying gap staring out at me and taunting me. Also goodbye to all Sony/Disney style cases (except for ones that came in slipcovers or boxsets that will not accomodate Viva size cases such as Nightmare Before Christmas & Spiderman Collection).

Has anybody found anywhere to order double disc Elite cases?

i just find the nubs on those cases too rough on the discs

If the cases you are talking about are standard 14mm DVD case size, you are probably looking for the same cases I was asking about a few posts back. The Farscape set came in these cases, 26 or 28 if you got the BB exclusive in 5 standard sized cases. Definitely space saving, but I haven't been able to find any of them available, just flimsy knockoffs on eBay and 14mm cases that hold all 6 discs on a single long central hub, neither of which is acceptable as an alternative IMO. Right now all of my 5 and up disc collections are in I think it is 27 mm cases with my Alien Quadrology in a 33mm multi DVD case, getting packaging down to the absolute minimum thickness would definitely save a ton of space. I, and another poster, you can read the posts below, believe the 14mm swing tray cases are made by the same manufacturer as the Viva Elite BD cases, so there is some hope of them appearing. I am suggesting that everyone interested in seeing these cases hit the blank case market request them from some of the sellers that deal in the Viva Elite BD listed in the first post.

Yes these VIVA Elite cases are the official cases used by Warner Bros. If you look at one of your standard cases from WB you should be able to see where it says VIVA and Elite somewhere near the disc or on the inside of the case on the spine.
I think that these cases are going to be far better in the long run than the sony/disney cases with the security flap on the opening. Some of those flaps on my older cases are clearly getting looser in the hinge just from opening them and I do not like the disc holder on them. The only problem is that the VIVA cases are more prone to breakage during shipping if you buy off of ebay.

Also an update on using up my replacement cases. I have 126 retail blu-rays (probably quite a few more by the end of the week though). I went through my collection and replaced all Sony/Disney cases and eco-cases with VIVA Elites (except movies where a VIVA elite case was too big for a slipcover like or boxset like spiderman trilogy). I also downgraded all of my 2-disc blu-rays where the second disc was just a digital copy into single disc elite cases. This freed up some 2 disc cases so I could put some of my 3-disc BDs into them once I disposed of the digital copies. I am down to only having like 50 single discs Elite cases left out of 100 originally purchased which apparently aren't going to last me as long as I thought. Luckily I now have about 3-4 spare 2-disc and 3-disc cases to replace future broken ones.

Has anyone else wasted this much time to force their collection to be exactly the way they want it? Also on a bit of an odd note it seems that 2-disc sony cases are actually a tiny bit smaller than the one-disc version, I tried to put Nightmare Before Christmas in a single disc after disposing of the DC, but then the slipcover was too tight. Also the 3-disc VIVA case seems to be slightly smaller than the single disc VIVA as I was getting rid of the DVD copy & DC for Bolt, but the slipcover was too tight, but it fit just fine on the 3-disc case. Has anybody else noticed this? Or am I just losing my mind from staring at and opening cases to swap inserts between cases for the better part of yesterday?

This is the first time that I've looked at this thread (just starting to look into condensing some of my sets down into fewer cases) and I have a couple of thoughts.

1- It's amazing the amount of info you gents (and ladies??) have put out there. I think I'm now fully prepared for a test on the differences of Vortex and Elite cases, why they exist, and what studios use them.

2- I have not one, not two, but three friends who work at Discmakers. I've NEVER had to even come close to asking them for anything about their work but I do know that they have all kinds of crazy cases for their DVD and CD collections. I e-mailed them tonight to ask about the Viva Elite TRIPLE case and if they know if Discmakers will be getting them in soon (if I can get more than a handful on the downlow) or who else sells them. One of my friends is a top salesmen for them so he may have the 4-1-1 on this.

If I find anything out on this front, I'll pass the news along.

Yes but I did the exact opposite of what you did and replaced my Viva Elite cases with the Sony/Disney type cases. I prefer those cases over the Viva Elite cases.

When you say "slipcover," are you referring to the cover insert or the cardboard O-Ring slipcover? Slipcovers are not to be confused with cardboard slipcases which only have a single opening to slip the case in and out of, leaving the spine exposed, whereas, an O-Ring slipcover has both an opening at the top and bottom. O-Rings allow for additional marketing when lenticular images are applied (Hellboy II: The Golden Army); or if all of the disc information is only printed on the slipcover (Iron Man; Transformers); or if a foldout cover is secured with velcro (Fight Club). The Nightmare Before Christmas originally uses an 11mm double-disc Vortex case, so the cover insert shouldn't be tight on a 12.5mm single-disc Elite, however, an Elite case would be a tight fit in the accompanying cardboard O-Ring slipcover. Bolt uses a 15.8mm triple-disc Vortex case, so the cover insert would be incredibly tight on a 12.5mm Elite case. My copy of Bolt didn't have an O-Ring, but if it did, swapping it with an Elite should result in an incredibly loose fit.

I totally agree. I scratch my head whenever I read that people prefer the Viva Elite cases. The Elite cases will not accommodate all sized inserts (they are slightly narrower than the Vortex cases). The Viva Elite cases are extremely susceptible to damage: The top and bottom of the spine curves slightly and sometimes tend to break off. The Vortex cases actually have the stress free hubs whie the Viva Elite cases have hubs that could possibly cause cracks to develop over time at the center of the disc—and the hub's teeth are also susceptible to cracking. The Vortex cases also have a nice embossed logo. The only shortcoming I see is the side latch—but it is easily folded and snapped inside the case. To each his own.

I was under the impression that the open top and bottom O-Ring ones were being referred to as slipcovers and the slipcases with the side opening were being called slipboxes on these boards (and the term slipboxes also applies to boxsets such as Spiderman Trilogy).

I haven't had much trouble with the inside cover inserts from Vortex movies being too big for VIVA Elite cases. They are definitely bigger and go closer to the edge of the plastic sheet cover, but only like one or two of them were actually too big to fit and would have wrinkled without a tiny bit of trimming. My main problem with switching inserts is sometimes there is not enough open space on the edge to shift the inserts to the side like 1mm to get the title to line up properly on the spine.

I was trying to replace Nightmare Before Christmas' double disc Vortex case with a single disc Vortex (because I don't like empty disc holders after digital copies are disposed of), but for some very odd reason it seems that the O-Ring slipcover is too tight on the single disc but not the double that originally came in it and I tried it with several different single and doubles all official Vortex cases.

Odd about the Bolt case. My Bolt came in a 3-disc VIVA Elite case similar to Dark Knight and Watchmen and it came with an accompanying slipcover that fit it perfectly when I bought it brand new from amazon about 1 or 2 months ago. I assume your version that came in the larger 3-Disc Vortex was part of the original shipment and should have come with a slipcover to match.

I also think that I have seen where the original Wall-E 3-disc version with digital copy (or maybe it was some other 3-disc Disney film I don't know for sure) was originally in a 3-disc Vortex, but later ones were in 3-disc VIVA cases that are smaller, but the stores still had them sitting loose in the larger older slipcovers. Can anyone confirm Disney movies changing case sizes in later shipment and possibly getting different size slipcovers to match?

Wow, I've been needing a replacement 3 disc case but that vernon library site is charging $13 shipping to Canada on their $2 case. Forget that. I need a reasonable price on a 3 disc case, my Firefly set came in a broken one.

What a great idea! I don't know why this hasn't occurred to me yet. I have never used a digital copy, and they have expiry dates anyway, so they're just wasting space. I went through my collection and got several two-disc cases that I can use. I have a couple of 3-disc cases now that will come in handy for the future. Sometimes I put my old DVD copy in with the BD if it has unique bonus featurettes or audio commentaries that didn't make it to the blu-ray edition.

(off topic, I resent companies trying to pass digital copies off as things like "3-disc special edition" when you are only getting two discs and a digital copy that most of us don't want)
