Pre-outs are a set of connections that run an unamplified signal from your receiver to an external amplifier. If your receiver doesn't have them then you can never add a separate amp to your setup.

Which in my case meant a case of upgraditis to get them. If you think they are not worth it, think hard.....as I should had gotten a receiver with them from the beginning, but instead went the cheap way out and paid more in the long run.

I'm in the same boat. I might have just added an amp rather than buying a whole new receiver, but the Onkyo 605 doesn't have them.

Yeah, the 605 was a great entry receiver, but I got the bug pretty bad and then....well....upgraditis took over.....and I'll never go any way but blu again!

from what i can tell, fosberg is trying to just 'future proof' his purchase... considering what can be added on later down the road, without double dipping on a receiver.

its one of those "i can settle for this receiver, then get a better one", which i tend to avoid as much as possible.

i tend to think 3-5 years is a good performer, and avoid replacing things over and over thru the years.

ahh i see, thanx for the info

so let me just clarify
if a receiver has pre outs then i can hook up separate amplifier in the future and i can get more power out of my speakers?
wow that will come in really handy

where can i find a avr 254 in canada? future shop has some nice HK's but not a 254

and where on the specs on FS/BB, does it say it has pre outs so i know where too look when shoppin around

thanx

I had that mindset as well when I bought my new SC-25. I can add an amp if I want to and hopefully there will be no need to replace it for a long time.

The specs on the the BB/FS website may or not say. The easiest thing I've found to do is go to the manufacturer's website and look at pictures of the back of the various models. You will be able to see if there are pre-outs or not. All receivers will have a pre-out for a subwoofer so don't be fooled by that. Look for a complete set. There should be 8 connections in the grouping, one for every speaker in a 7.1 setup (including the subwoofer). I don't know that anyone is including pre-out connections yet for the new height/width channels.

If you go look at models in the store, turn the unit around and look at the back for yourself.

As a sample, here's a pic of the back of my SC-25. Notice on the right side right under where you connect the power cable there is a group of connections labeled 'PRE OUT'. That's what you want to look for.

I strongly suggest that you look also into the Marantz 4003, Marantz receivers are known for designing their receivers around the amp first then adding features.... so the 80 wpc is probably pretty accurate, and it has pre-outs for an amp later.... what it doesn't have is HD audio decoding, but you are already using Linear PCM, so you wouldn't see any change in that regards to HD audio(uncompressed Audio).
