Default Is it possible for my Onkyo 605 to reduce PQ?

I just picked up a panasonic 50" G10 and had a chance to set everything back up today. Currently I have comcast HD, and temporarily had it hooked straight to the tv through hdmi yesterday. The picture was fantastic, but I've noticed a slight degrade in picture quality today when I ran hdmi from receiver out to tv and then hdmi 1 on receiver to cable box. It's not a huge difference and I mostly notice in in fast paced scenes.

Is it possible for the receiver to degrade the picture? I thought it acted as a pass through, as it should just pass the 1080i from the cable box to the tv. I've searched through googles search and haven't found a definite answer.

I'm pretty sure the 605 will convert 1080i to 720p. I'm not sure if there is a way to change this or not.

If that's true, what the hell sense does that make? What are my options around this?

Well, after re-reading the original post, I may have been mistaken. If you have your cable box connected over HDMI, I believe it should pass the video through untouched. It only "down-converts" over component.

I'll look into it a little more for you and let you know what I find out.

Yeah everything is connected hdmi, one from tv to receiver out, one from hdmi 1 on receiver to hd cable box. That's what I thought but never noticed it on my little 32" LCD, now that I have the 50" I can easily tell it's not the same quality.

Thanks man I appreciate it.

why not hook the comcast hd box hdmi out to the tv hdmi in
then use a coaxial cable or toslink cable to the receiver?

This is correct- the HDMI is untouched. Honestly, it should just pass it through OP, but if you feel there's a loss in quality try it as Don suggested or try a different set of cables. Makes me curious to try mine directly to the set as I have mine going to the 805 via HDMI. Never had any complaints about the PQ on digital cable though outside of their horrible compression.

Haven't tried this, I'll give it a shot. Thanks

But the more I think about it the more I think it's comcast's horrible signal on some channels.

Take a pic both ways and compare.....I bet it is the compressed signal of Comcast as well.....

Just compare carefully before concluding your receiver is degrading the signal. As you mentioned, with Comcast picture quality varies greatly from channel to channel, and even broadcast to broadcast on the same channel, all depending on the source material. If you have a Comcast HD DVR, try comparing picture by usiing the same pre-recorded program, so you compare the same signal.

I'll chime in that the 605 won't do anything if youre using HDMI like downconvert or anything, just over component as was mentioned above.
In my setup I also run my HDMI to the TV and get audio over optical, also as mentioned above.

Just curious why you use the optical for you audio? Any difference with this?

In this instance... there should be no difference in sound quality between HDMI and optical, since optical will easily transmit Dolby Digital. If you went straight to the TV with the HDMI... then you would need optical to the receiver for your audio.
