Well I think that the new $399 PS3 that just got announced will be pumping up Blu-Ray numbers. Come guys think positive HD-DVD almost on a week that Blu-Ray had no big releases or anything really good for Blu-ray the whole month of September.

300 is still hanging in there 2 months after release. Why the obsession with Transformers week? If any of Spiderman, POTC, Diehard etc went up against it, they would win at least 60-40. Are people really more interested in ratios for the week of Transformers, going up against little, than total Q4 SALES. Seems to me some have been taken in by HD-DVD FUD, willing to give HD-DVD the YEAR if they win a SINGLE week. |

Transformers will sell more on the first week than all other titles combined on both formats. I wouldn't be surprised if BD was down in the low 30's. Let's just get over that.
But in good news, Knocked Up was actually one of their big exclusive blockbusters, and now it is out and done with and still didn't take the lead. Just one less title to worry about. October was always going to be one of the roughest months for BD, but Nov and Dec, the deck is heavily stacked in BD's favor. |

Personally, I am a fan of Blu because of the superior specs and it is practical for me. I use it for movies. Visitors and family use it for both. I don't favor incremental change. I like when something comes along that is superior while promising even more. This is why I prefer Blu. It is also interesting to note that I have been on the fence thinking about an HD-A2 so I can have BB, V, Matrix Trilogy, and Posiedon. I can't tell you the number of times and moved them from "save for later" to my "cart" and back. I actually pulled the trigger 2 times. The first time, I had to request an RMA. The second, I was able to cancel the player but not the movies. I contacted amazon and they advised me to refuse the movies. It is amazing how quickly the option for cancelling HD-DVD orders disappear. I may as paranoid as you guys are being over these weekly numbers. This is about a war, not weekly battles. I think Blu-Ray will prevail with better advertising and a grassroots push. It is in the latter that HD-DVD is gaining. The B&M stores. The world hates sony for the reason that we love the company. Superior products? Oh yeah! Man they cost so much! Asia and Walmart has spoiled us into thinking that we can always get this quality for little $$$. And so they wait for the costs to fall like LCD and Plasma. We are techies and mostly favor blu for reasons that will not determine the war, namely specs. The average person cares about the bottom line and a decent user-friendly product, period. Give them that superior product at a nice bottom line and it's game over. They don't have to listen the the HD-DVD zealots at the stores. Oh I got this one!
As for interactivity and PIP? How many people use those features on their TVs. Just what I need, stupid pop-ups taking up my already small 42 incher. Get real people! How about buying merchandise for a movie that has long left the theaters. Sounds cool but impractical and dumb. Should I now dedicate an entire day to watch all this crap that comes with my feature? Why do I need to see "behind the scenes" to take away the magic? Will I want to watch it again and will I feel as excited once I see how it's done? WHO CARES! Give us great pic and sound and let us get on with our lives. We have soccer, baseball, football, and a host of other things to worry about. This is why we use Tivo/DVR to cut out the crap. So why don't I have a HD-DVD player? I will be damned if I am going to buy a player to watch 4 movies, 5 when Transformers land. Bottom line! I will not pay to have that $200+ gathering dust and staring at me everytime I walk by. This is why the PS3 does a disservice to stand alone players. With a lot more content comes practicality of stand-alones. It is no longer a niche product, but mainstream. This is the war. FYI to those pondering HD-DVD. Whenever you feel like taking the jump, buy a blu-ray movie that is outside your normal taste. Try a different genre. This is how I enjoy my PS3. Everyone cannot afford to be an early-adopter, but anyone can join a winner early. Also, check out the new list of free movies to choose from. That killed it for me. |

I think some would be happy if Blu-ray sold fewer titles in Q4, so long as Spiderman 3 was brought forward to steal Transformers thunder. It may look neat on a graph to see Blu-ray winning every week, but the only numbers that matter are total sales per quarter. These weekly figures are becoming a red herring and ammunition for FUD meistors. I'd much prefare monthly numbers with a breakdown of each week, we can then see the bigger picture. |

Q4 will be a roller coaster. I don't doubt it.
It is very interesting that KU can sell 4x any other disc and not win the week or move SI or YTD. That shows that Transformers has a bit of a task. I think that it will more likely win the week than not, but it is not a done deal IMHO. Also, 'winning' based on a handful of titles best weeks is not actually winning, it is clear that this week the catalog titles sold much better on BD. The top 10 totals show a win to HD DVD (4:3 ratio), but that was turned back into a BD win by the catalog sales. If you remove KU from the top 10, the top 10 is 2.3:1 in favour of BD ![]() One title made all the difference this week. |

DON'T GET ME WRONG...... I don't care that HD DVD will win one week.... I am just a realist. I accept Transformers will win that week.. Its so clear on the wall that its hard for me to understand someone saying that Blu Ray will win that week... Even with the 7 movie player deal from Amazon for HD DVD, I still refuse to support them or Paramount. But that doesn't mean that i will sit around and hope that we win Transformers week. I would put Ratatouille against Shrek 3 any day..... Pirates against Bourne Superbad against Chuck/Larry Surf's up against Evan Almighty And Spidey 3 against Transformers if it wasn't released as a bundle with PS3/trilogy/single (more over profit for sony but less unit sales since there are 3 different ways of getting it unless they are combined) Regardless of which movie is better, our Big Guns will outsell theres and we still have CARS, DIE HARD, SIMPSONS, 28 WEEKS, FF4-2, MEET ROBINSONS with nothing on HD to counter it. HD DVD's FUD has nothing on me. So they win one week out of the year. I don't care, lets just not be nieve to think we will win Transformers week Last edited by xmositox; 10-05-2007 at 06:00 PM. |

poor figures. i think the uncertainty of the paramount deal is responsible for the lack of sales from either side. Knocked up did better than i thought it would by some way

It is well known for people like US but if you look in the stores there is little to nothing that indicates that Paramount stopped making BDs. The effect will become greater over time of course but I think it is early days myself... |

only the internet savvy who go to forums will know, and looking at the figures, not many of us bought much that week!

I think a dip in the overall percentages is to be expected given Paramount the sellout robbed Blu-ray of over 30 titles.

I was also not suprised by this week, except for Next doing so poorly. Just because it is not a great film, doesn't mean it won't sell well, it is an action movie. Underworld selling just as many should make Paramount hang there head in shame.
One other point I would like to make is that Spetember is just always a slow month for sales. End of summer and school starting, there is no wonder that the sales ratios have been closer. Certainly not the Paramount annoucement that the HD'ers claim is closing the gap. |
