- and now we get SGU but at an expensive price.
No SG1 on blu:
The first 5 seasons were not prepared with HD in mind. The 6th season is the first that might be able to benefit from a blu-ray upgrade without going back to scratch on special effects, etc. This is a huge cost factor, and it's not clear that sales would balance the cost.

No SGA on blu:
Atlantis apparently didn't sell well on DVD - an effect of being sort of an also ran series, I'm sure. When Atlantis wasn't outright ripping off SG-1 stories, it wasn't really creating a great new mythology. That said, there are probably some like me who didn't pick up the series because they're waiting on blu-ray.

As far as I'm concerned, the best way to encourage blu-ray releases for the prior series is to buy the blu-ray direct to video productions from both. Hopefully the 2 new DTV movies will get back on track sooner than later.

I agree on all accounts with you.

Just to be clear: I'm not disappointed about SG1 not making it to blu-ray. Sure, I'd love to have it on blu but I knew that the reasons for not releasing it is that the source material would require too costly a process to make it HD-worthy. I did buy Continuum and Ark of Truth on Blu-ray on release date and was very happy with them. I read on insider blogs that MGM was actually quite happy with the sales of those direct-to-video movies.

Atlantis is another bag of beans. Fans were somewhat promised they'd get the entire series on blu by MGM and then they pulled their tails in. When I started collecting Blu's, Atlantis was actually the first series I wanted to buy on blu (heck, it was one of the first announced to be released on blu). No doubt many a fan held off on purchasing the DVD's because the Blu-rays were announced ... and now nothing I also won't go back and buy the DVD's since the HD broadcast recordings I have look better than the DVD's.

SGU: here's a good chance for MGM to please the fans as well as make some money and they bury the whole thing from the get-go by asking a high price

I don't know but to me it sounds like MGM just keeps shooting themselves in the foot and are incoherent in their strategy: when you're selling a show on DVD and at the same time announce it'll be released on blu-ray, only to state 2-3 years later you won't release the whole series on blu-ray, then you're just hurting yourself and angering fans who have been holding off buying the DVD's and waiting patiently for the blu-rays.

Stargate is such a beautiful Sci-fi franchise yet it feels like the higher-ups don't know how to correctly market it.

Stargate Universe: Season One Blu-ray
SG-U 1.0

I have not seen any of SG-U, at the Amazon pre-order price of $39 now, is it worth it? Is it really only 9 episodes???

i'm a long time stargate fan. seen every single ep/movie of SG-1 and SG-A. saw the 1st 3 eps of SGU and decided to wait for the Blu-Ray. i'm hoping that they would have at least packaged season 1 TOGETHER... but alas it's going to be split up into 1.0 and 1.5.

my guess is that there's gonna be a season 1 boxset or maybe even complete series boxset =P.

Which is why I like it, SG-1 was derivative sci-fi in all its non-glory,(IMO).

I think that's another bias I have against SGU. I think of it as the reason for the cancellation of SGA. Maybe they're unrelated but it's hard to swallow when SGA was just hitting its prime and it was much more "stargate" (to me anyway).

Congrats on meeting them. Was it a fan convention or something of that nature?

Anyway, as for the thread topic, the price didn't seem too high to me at first but I guess considering it's half a season, it's a little high.

So far this series makes me hope every character gets killed since all of them makes me want to blow up their ship.

Here's what I don't get...SG-1 is by far the most popular of the franchise. why not just do like a next generation style show like star trek did. same type of show same setting and a new cast. Honestly I wish they had kept SG-1 going I loved every one of those characters and I thought the Ori story line was pretty interesting. I'm giving SGU till the end of the season and if it hasn't improved I'm not watching it next year and i've been a stargate nut since the very first episode aired on showtime. Eli is the only thing I like bout the new show. The Reality show interviews, the meaningless sex all over the place, the lack of action or bad guys all need to stop.

They did.... it was called Atlantis. Now i enjoyed Atlantis, i don't understand why it got cancelled, but if i had a choice of continuing on with the same old same old or trying something new with the mythos the stargate universe provides, i vote for something new. SGU whether you like it or not is just that, new. Had they tried to get the green light for stargate:ds9 it would have never happened, and we would have been left with no new gate at all, which sadly it seems most fans would have preferred.

I grew really tired and bored with star trek by the time voyager came out, and frankly was not really concerned if they ever made a new trek, but enterprise, although those geeky diehards hated it as well, breathed some life back into the series imo. Re-sparked my interest in a series i thought was long gone. Same with stargate, after 10 seasons of sg-1 and like what 5-6 of atlantis which was all the same thing over and over again. It became the type of show where it's like "ehh i'll catch it when it comes out on dvd". Hell i know most atlantis shows i would watch and could peg each one down to its matching counterpoint episode in SG1, what kind of good tv is that?

Great post. I am with you as part of the minority of people who enjoyed Enterprise; it had a nice gritty feel to it and brought a new dynamic to the franchise. I personally could have done with a couple of more seasons of Atlantis, but am enjoying SGU for what it is, rather than offer comparisons and criticism to the previous SG offerings. Like the show or not, if you're an SG fan, support the series to prosper the franchise.
