I already have one that I initially ordered when I was having laser issues and thought it was my system overheating. I just have to find it.

I hope you bought this one...

http://www.amazon.com/PS3-Intercoole.../dp/B001CP0Q8S

or this one...

http://www.amazon.com/Deluxe-USB-Coo...9711266&sr=1-4

Both seem to be the very best at what they do and I have heard no YLOD complaints from people who have bought them. The latter I've heard actually works on PS3 Slims (even though dumb employees say, "there are no fans for slim PS3's yet...even though you find on amazon their most certainly ARE) as well and in fact will be the fan on my slim once I get it up and running.

Hmm.. I put The Thing in my player this morning and it played fine until I left.. Is there ANY possibility that I got 2 faulty discs from Universal, or is that just a stupid hope?

I can vouch for my PS3 YLODing with the first Intercooler posted. I purchased this after my first YLOD, did the reflow, slapped this badboy on and within 2 weeks it was YLOD again. Then I was told (somewhere on this thread I believe) the Intercoolers that go on the back of the PS3's can restrict the natural airflow. But since it YLODed twice with this on it, the Intercooler is now back in its original box with nowhere to go and nothing to do. If anyone wants it, I accept paypal. Make me an offer. It may work fine on yours, mine may have been too sick at the moment to let it do any good. Could possibly trade for a blu or two...

Quick question. I just bought a Slim PS3 and I have a 400 GB harddrive in my old PS3 that I want to put in my new PS3. Do I still need to back up everything before I swap the harddrives out?

Yes as whenever you put a hard drive into a PS3 thats different than its current one, it formats it.

So I can just back up everything. I don't need to format it myself cause the new PS3 will format it, correct?

Correct.

How I did things was I put my HDD in my computer and I have a special program for things like this. I was able to read all the files/extensions from the HDD as they showed up on my PS3. I could not open them/view them but I just copied them as they were to a storage media. That way I have a backup and I didn't need to break warranty. I still haven't put it in my new Slim to complete testing but I'm 99% sure it will work as I did not change any file types and it looks EXACTLY as it did on my old PS3 that read those files quite fine if I do say so myself. This is just another tip for people who do not want to break warranty (or still under warranty) before they send to SONY and get an absolutly new system. I will do this method again if I, and hopefully I will not*knock on wood*, get a YLOD again.

Have you tested your theory out yet? For example, try to take a file off and put it back on and see if its still recognized? Like an MP3.

Error Codes usually are not associated with laser failure. Did you try googling the error?

Yea, from what I heard, once you get a YLOD it's not possible to fully resurrect your console- your just trying to prolong it's life at that point. It will die again, no matter what you do. Again these are just from accounts from people I know and have heard from.

That first fan I had posted is good but not the best. The best right now seems to be the second one I posted (and can someone CONFIRM that works with Slims- I heard it does but I want to be sure). And, again, putting a fan on AFTER a YLOD may prolong it's life but your only delaying the inevitable. The BEST way to use a fan is to have it on already the first time out of the package that you boot up your system. That way your giving it a 100% fair shot for the system to best utilize the fan and the fan to best utilize the system.

Haven't tested my theory. But EVERY thing is identical to how it was on the old PS3. I don't know how it WOULDN'T work unless we live in some bizzaro crazy universe where regular rules don't apply. I will update you and this thread if it does.

Depends if there could be some form of encryption/decryption thats non-detectable when doing backups etc. I don't know myself as I haven't tried.

or because the PS3 will automatically erase it... You'd need to put in another HDD get it formatted, then try to switch files out, put it back in and works.. From my talks with the tech's it won't work..

Btw: there are 2 different types of lasers available here in Denmark:

http://www.chip-kolding.dk/shop/index.php?cPath=82_131

KEM-400AAA & KEM-410ACA

It says I have to take apart my PS3 to check which one to get but is there no other way? I have a 60GB Playstation - anyone know which one to get?

So after I put my 500GB in, format it, I should be able to transfer my files? That's what I was planning to do anyway? I wouldn't upload the saves until I formatted the new system as the PS3 asks you to do that automatically when it senses a new HDD in it (I'm taking the Slim's 120GB and putting in my 500GB right away).

GOD....I HATE SONY!!! They shouldn't of charged this much for a faulty system. I have my new system. I want to get on and play but all these hoops I have to deal with first are driving me f'ing bonkers.

Is your PS3 past warranty? Do NOT take it apart if it is not past warranty first.

http://www.bukisa.com/articles/514_p...o-resolve-them

Found this list of PS3 error codes hope it helps.

In your case: 80010510 - Don't start games on your hard disk. Unknown cause.
