According to my non scientific tests - this is not indicitive of a heat issue. I used one of my Demo discs over the stove at full blast. Melted down the disc numerous times with rapid cold water cooling.

The disc deformed and bent. The scratch resistant cover on the disc, from what I saw, does not melt at high tempratures. I pulled a piece off and set it on the burner and it curled, but did not melt. Whatever this tuff is is TOUGH as hell!

I think this issue is a quality control one. Did this disc play before? Was it discolored beforehand?

That's intense heat though - could it just be from lying out in the sun?

That's what I thought initially. Not sure anyone would leave their discs in the sun to be honest? Unless I am wrong and that is what we see here?

Did someone stick an HD-DVD into the blu-ray line just for fun maybe?

I haven't removed it from the case other than to pop into the PS3 to play a few times(i think I have viewed this disc maybe 6 or 7 times of which it did work). I don't know if it was discolored to begin with, but it's quite possible...but I sincerely have no idea, its been months since I bought it.

It's been about 3 months though since I actually watched it. Generally speaking, the location it was stored in was about 72 Degree Farenheit and mid to low humidity. But considering that it was stored both in the plastic box and in the cardboard slip, it should have been generally protected.
