Correct. You'l have to rely on the display on the player to tell you which audio you are getting instead of the display on the receiver.

I wasn't aware the OP's player can't decode DTS-HD MA. This hasn't been added via a firmware update? Sony's been pretty good about that. The PS3 was one of the first machines to have DTS-HD MA added via firmware like 2 years ago.

Well when I check the audio of the player while having the player set at PCM, the player audio still only says DTS or Dolby Digital, nothing with HD in it.

for dts and your player, thats all youll get.

i dont have your player so check the manual set up for audio to double check everything. also some movies require you to select the hd audio from the movie menu. but your player should say true hd while your receiver says pcm or multichannel. double check the manual to see what the player should display.

Did you check which audio is playing on the disc? Remember that a lot of discs don't automatically start up with TrueHD as the default codec. You may have to go into the menu to select it.

Yeah, for Star Trek, which supports Dolby Digital TrueHD, I went on the main menu and selected settings. It was selected to run the 5.1 DD TrueHD, but when the movie plays, the receiver says "Linear PCM" (which I understand now), but when I hit the "audio" button on the remote, the 4 options that come up are Dolby Digital and the rest are the same just diff languages. Again, nothing with TrueHD...

Everything is hooked up with HDMI and its in port 3 of the receiver and all the connections are good.. The only thing I can think of now is maybe the HMDI cable is not 1.3. I just got it last night and its the Acoustic Research ES85 HDMI cable, does anyone know if this 1.3 or not?

im willing to bet since you said it sounded better when set to pcm, your hearing true hd. remember your player had to have an update to internally decode true hd and come to think of it, may not stat on the screen true hd or even in your manual what it should say. so i say if its set to pcm, and it sounds better, your getting it

edit: dont worry about the hdmi cord either

I'm at a loss now, my friend. That's exactly how I have my receiver setup, and Star Trek plays in TrueHD. When was the last time you updated the firmware on your blu-ray player?

The last update I DL'd was Nov 13th, V5.20... And I just called HHGregg and they told me all the cables they sell here are 1.3 compatible. So I am at a loss too..

I think un4gvn94538 might be right. Maybe its cause I have an old Blu-ray player, even with the updates it wont say Dolby Digital TrueHD on the player but maybe I am still getting it with the Linear PCM...

just to add to the above here

if you want to make sure what your player should be showing, i suggest you find an active thread either here, or avsforums. it should be able to tell you what you need to see on your display

It really sounds like you're doing everything right, Lush. I can't figure out why your player is not saying TrueHD, unless it is like un4gvn is saying - that you are getting it but the dsplay won't show it because it is an older device. Your best bet is to browse the forums to try to find other user with the same player to see if they can help you. Just rest assured your receiver is compatible, you just need to work out the player part of it. Best of luck.

The S300 doesn't support DTS HD and it will only decode TrueHD not bitstream. Get a 350 or 360 and you can bitstream them to your receiver.

I just joined up and cannot start my own thread yet. I hope my post isn't hijaking this thread but I do have HD sound issues.

I bought a LG BD370 as my entry into Blu-ray players. I also wanted to take advantage of NetFlix/YouTube streaming. However, the audio connected with optical cable to my "ancient" Sony STR-DE825 receiver ends up as Stereo PCM. I reread specs on the web and in the LG manual. Seemed confusing but ultimately I guess I can only get digital audio with HDMI. With optical, I can only get digital audio with LPCM which my receiver can't decode. I read some other posts here seeing suggestions for the Sony STR-DH700, STR-DH800, or STR-DN1000 receivers as low cost receivers that will do the job.

Am I correct that I will not be able to get the LG BD370 / Sony STR_DE825 combo to output digital audio? If that is the case, did I buy the wrong Blu-ray player or should I take the opportunity upgrade my receiver (my wife is not against this option ... although she is still not keen on a new subwoofer ).

Thanks.

Optical and HDMI both transmit digital audio. Optical can do stereo PCM and multichannel DD and DTS while HDMI can do multichannel PCM and the new lossless codecs, TrueHD and dts-MA. The optical output of your LG player will provide a perfectly usable signal to your old Sony receiver for any any discs with Dolby tracks. Your receiver can process PCM and decode DD 5.1. (TrueHD is OK too since it is output as DD 5.1 over optical.) However, your receiver lacks a DTS decoder and that will be a problem because half of all Blu-rays only have DTS tracks and no Dolby. You can still get audio from those discs. But, it will be limited to stereo PCM. It will be the same story with any player that you get. The problem is your receiver, not the player. I think you should get a new AVR.

OK. I will get a new AVR. It's about time. Meanwhile, I wonder why I cannot get better than stereo PCM when a Dolby DVD is played with the player. My XBox 360 plays the DVD fine with Dolby Digital to same receiver. I suppose I can play DVDs with my XBox until I get the new receiver.

I am not familiar with the LG audio settings. But, I suspect you have it set to PCM instead of bitstream. Bitstream is the correct setting to send DD 5.1 to your receiver.

Default BDP-N460 and STR-DG810 receiver

I'm connecting a new BDP-N460 to a STR-DG810 receiver, all HDMI connections. Get picture and some sound, but missing a voice track or two from BD movies and regular DVD movies. Soundtrack, sound effects and off camera sounds come through fine. Did reset to factory defaults on both units, no change. Once the two units are connected the audio options on the receiver get locked out.

I have tried setting the BD player audio to DIRECT with no change.

Is there an initial audio setup on the receiver I should set in order for these two devices to work together?

Is there a compatibility issue between these two? Seems like the BD player is faulty. I'm getting ready to send the N460 back to Amazon. Any ideas?

Your help and comments are much appreciated!

Tom
