Default Hey Netflix... Where are the Blu-rays?

Hi Everyone,
I'm not sure how many of you use Netflix. It seems a lot of folks here seem to buy BDs outright. Personally, I have to use Netflix to see most Blu-Rays. Otherwise, I simply couldn't afford it.
Until recently I thought Netflix was a great resource for viewing material available in Blu. Often times I find myself checking the release dates of material available on Blu-Ray.com then adding those items to my Netflix queue. This was all going flawlessly until a couple of weeks ago when "Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise" came out on BD. I have never seen this film and as a fan of Anime I was excited to see it for the first time on Blu-Ray. Unfortunately, Netflix wouldn't even admit to the movie's existence. OK, that's no biggie. I guess it's pretty obscure film. Nobody's perfect, certainly not Netflix. I'm wiling to forgive for now.
So, this week I hit the Blu-ray.com site to see release dates so I can add some titles to the Netflix queue. As you all know there have been some great releases over the past few weeks. Some of them have been down right classic. I added "The Fly" and "Halloween" to the top of my queue. When I check my queue both these films were added as the DVD not the Blu-ray format. I understand that there are probably not too many Netflix customers angry about, "Wings of Honnramise". But, "The Fly" and "Halloween"? Seriously, I can not be the only one pissed that I can't rent these from Netflix. So, what else are we missing? “Dawn of the Dead” is available on DVD and HDDVD. What the eff? Neither “Day of the Dead” nor “Evil Dead II” gets no Blu-Ray?
I’ve got to say something. I mean after all I am paying almost $25 a month for this. Selection shouldn’t really be an issue.
So, Netflix is not exactly the easiest to get a hold of to complain about anything. But, if anyone thinks Netflix should have all Blu-ray titles available as I do. Please contact them and say so.
Thanks very much for reading.

Ross.

I personally buy my movies that I like but you might want to give Blockbuster.com a try they only rent Blu-rays no HDDVD I can't say for sure but you might fine a better sellection and I think they might be cheeper...

I have NetFlix as well and have encountered the same problem. Unfortunately, Blockbuster isn't much better. They don't get most of the new releases on the release date, if at all. The only new release I found in the last week was Fantastic 4:RotSS. No Day After Tomorrow, no Dawn / Day of the dead or Evil Dead. I'm not sure what the deal is.

You need to make sure you have Blu-Ray as your first choice and DVD as your second under Format Preferences. So if you add a movie that is already out on Blu-Ray, it will select the BD instead of DVD.

However, if you add a movie to your queue that has not been released on video yet, it will save to your queue as DVD. Once Netflix is informed about the title being released on BD, it will give you the option to change it. BUT you have to go back in and change it. Netflix is currently working on this problem.

I have come to the conclusion that NetFlix only goes after Blu-Rays that have a high rent rate. The get almost all the new releases that are new to DVD too, but the older catalog titles (like Halloween and Evil Dead) probably don't have too high a rent rates, therefore, NetFlix does not purchase any of these.

I also have Netflix and they seem to only get the new release BD's in stock. They have some of the old ones, but the selection of older BD's is slim. I called to complain and I was told that the more demand there is for a movie (i.e. more queues it is stored in) then the more movies they will order. We just have to get more blu users on Netflix and all is settled!! That and continually request new titles on BD!

You mean that there is some kind of coding issue with adding films that are both on DVD and Blu formats?
Because all movies that I add to my queue that are available on the Blu-ray format get added to my queue as a BD. I have my preference set for Blu-ray as you mentioned. The films I spoke of in my earlier post are all currently available in BD. So, more or less I am concerned to why Netflix is not adding new Blu titles (i.e.: The Fly, Halloween, George A Romero’s "Dead" films) to their rentable inventory as the films are released.

My question is how can we queue titles that don't exist? So, I guess if you don't call and complain then there is no chance of seeing that title in Blu. I hope everybody complains. That will make them pay attention

Blockbuster online is a lot better when it comes to Blu-rays. Only when I go to exchange for an in-store rental their selection is pretty pitiful.

Good point... Netflix does seem to have a certain level of inertia when it comes to stocking catalog titles on Blu-Ray. I hard Pearl Harbor on my queue for the longest time. I still have Discovery Atlas: Australia, China, and Italy as being "Availability unknown" although these titles were released eons ago (for some reason Discovery Atlas: Brazil is available!).

I also seem to wait forever to get movies - Blood Diamond is a good example... I had that movie on my queue 2 weeks before BD release - but to date have a "Very Long Wait" on it... So, if one you guys is holding onto the only copy that Netflix seems to have - return it!!

That's true too. I had 300 at the top of my queue for ever. I hadn't seen it in the theater. It was one of those rare films that come to Blu-ray that I haven't already seen by the time they are released. Anyways, I was waiting and waiting for the disk to get to the house. It was probably a month before I got a chance to see it. Just out of curosity I had my roomate put 300 on DVD at the top of his queue the same time I added the Blu-ray. My roomate had the disk inside of a week.

Default You are a drop in the bucket

If you saw a chart of Blu rentals versus DVD rentals on Netflix, you would see this. They will get the new movies in on Blu I am sure, but as for "copies" of their current offering, they may be a bit slower.

What we have to keep in mind with Netflix or Blockbuster is that the HD titles (whether Blu-Ray or HDDVD) represent a very (and I mean very) small amount of the total movies rented. So if you are Netflix or BB, wouldn't you make sure that the majority of your customers are catered to versus keeping the scant minority happy? I wish this were not true, but it is simple business practices.

I have Netflix and wish that they stocked more Blu-Ray disks than they do. I put FF:ROSS on the top of my queue at least three weeks prior to its release. I even made sure that I had room in my queue on the release date for Netflix to send me that BD. No luck, it has been on "very long wait" since its release date.

Here is something else to ponder with Netflix. A while back I read an article in my local paper about a guy who was renting something like 50 movies a month from Netflix. After a couple of months with this activity level, Netflix started regulating the movies sent to him. The writer of the story suggested that Netflix (and I am sure BB does this too) monitors the accounts who use the sevice more frequently. They most likely have a level of activity where they start to throttle how often they send out movies.

I have suggested to Netflix that they charge additional money per month for a service where they guarantee that the customer would receive any title within 7 to 10 days. No response from Netflix.

I just took a look at Netflix (to see what the whole survey thing was that was posted on IMDB about HD-DVD been rented more than Blu-Ray). They claim to have over 400 Blu-Ray titles (including ones that haven't been announced yet). For that reason alone, I am glad I am with Blockbuster.com. Something about major false advertising bothers me... What? There was a Transformers preview that said it was coming to Blu-Ray?!?! (kidding)
