I am 43 and in my mid twenties I woke up and started reading Siskel and Ebert’s books and reviews of films and strangely the films they so praised I had never heard of. Battleship Potemkin? La Dolce Vita? Wild Strawberries? WTF are these films? Citizen Kane, All Quiet on the Western Front? 12 Angry Men? You got to be kidding right? So I would rent them on VHS not having money for a Laser Disc player, but with the advent of DVD and Criterion it opened up a whole new world to me. I am discovering a new film all the time, in fact tonight I am going to watch Diary of a Country Priest and this weekend try to watch Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage ....I have heard good things. So no in answer to your question I did not grow up on old films I gained an appreciation over time. I also think about 80% of the films Hollywood cranks out today are special effects garbage. It seems common place to have a lousy script, terrible acting and no character development but if we can pump 100 million into special effects the audience will go nuts. Also all the remakes, reboots and for god sake even an alternate timeline....are we really this desperate? No new material?

What's really funny is reading the board and seeing where the younger crowd thinks films that came out in my youth like Cujo and American Warewolf in London are held in such high regard when they were average to terrible back then.
