I'm afraid they will postpone release of the EE to immediately prior to "The Hobbit", to generate pre-release buzz.

That is correct, and also because Bakshi burnt himself out on it. I saw the Bakshi version when it was first run, and even back then he got an earful from Tolkien purists who didn't embrace his interpretation. You can imagine the eggshells that Jackson and Co. were walking on during their entire production!

I'll wait too unless they drop to about $45 on release day. Gone are the days I will spend $70+ on a trilogy.

I don't know if a release date has been set. According to theonering.net, casting is in process, and principal photography is slated to begin in May or June 2011. My initial guess is that since the LOTR movies were released in December, the movie will be released during holiday season 2012?

Shouldn't be much doubt about that. Even the TV showings of the three movies on TNT-HD have spectacular PQ.

The other thing too is these movies wear me out like no other. Ive seen them so many times between TNT and DVD, there's so much to digest, that Im concerned I buy the BDs, watch them once and not touch them for a year. In that case netflix can save me almost $50 or whatever it is. But like I said if I find out the PQ is stellar I might just buy them. |

I thought the following was pretty well known:
1. EE were being lined up with the Hobbit release in theaters. 2. Despite rumors of delays due to the legal issues (which have now been settled) scripts for both movies were to be delivered by end of December, and filming would begin in Spring of 2010. (There was a very recent interview with PJ during lovely bones premier confirming nothing had changed). 3. That would put the first Hobbit film at X-mas 2011 and the second at 2012. This would mean no extended editions until fall / holiday season of 2011. As I have said before, I will be more than happy to double dip as I will more than likely get over a year of use out of the theatrical verisons before the others are available. And quite honestly, as they released each EE, I found the added material to be less important and more time consuming, even in some cases interrupting the flow of the movie. I really enjoy the FOTR material, but after that, there are barely a few items in TTT and in ROTK I usually fast forward through some parts. |
