I had assumed as much. iPods and mp3s pretty much have that whole ground covered but there are still some of us that prefer the cd... (or B-AD )
I prefer CD and above PCM audio as well, but there's no reason why an iPod couldn't dock and act as a transport to a car system, using some derivative of the open FLAC standard.

It's hard to really say what's up and coming.

If there's a band with 5 instruments, i'd like to hear it out of 5 speakers. Likewise for 7 instruments (7 speakers), or a whole orchestra (anything from a classical orchestra, to a Balkan Gypsy Brass Orkestar, or a Rembetiko Orkestra). One channel, one speaker per instrument. And then think of the potential for surround CG sound.

I think new things will be coming for sound in Blu.

The new codecs do feature aspects of live mixing, where isolating an instrument could be possible.

However your request goes against proper mixing technique. The goal is to place the sound properly in the room. With your setup you lose all kinds of ambience and fullness that you'd get with 5.1 sound. Guitar and bass have to bleed into the center, and rhythmn is usually present in all 3 front channels, and the surrounds are used for the richness

The same goes with an orchestra, while you'd isolate by section, I think you wouldn't like the result of what you're asking for. The whole goal of a 5.1 music mix is a "you are there" feel

Yeah, you're probably right there. I guess what i'm looking for is the feel of individual instruments. You don't always get that in 5:1, I'm not sure about 7:1 or the placement of the speakers/channels. I think there is a lot that Blu-ray could offer to the improvement of home and car sound systems.
Thanks for your input. It's fun to consider this stuff.

Here's my idea for "Blu-CD":

-Works in any BD player.
-Has a standardized menu/chapter arrangement, so tracks are easy to find without using a screen, but (see below)
-Contains the following content:
Lossless 5.1 ~ 7.1 PCM audio for the songs studio, karaoke, or in some cases live concert versions
Karaoke text
Official Music videos in HD or SD

A disc like this would be perfect for everyone: casual listeners, video fans, DJs, drivers.

Amen! As long as the price is reasonable (I know it'll be more than an audio cd) I would buy it. I hate the idea of buying the same concert or whatever multiple times. Or when you've bought the CD or DVD only to find out later that the other is available (yeah, I've done the rip the audio out of a DVD and convert it to an audio CD thing....painful...compared to just buying it). A "one disk does all" thing would be perfect. Even better if you can play it on any system...1 speaker or 7.1...whatever you want to put your disk into and play it. Yeah, the 7.1 is going to sound the best but probably won't be installed in the car anytime soon.

Traditionally, classical chamber music was played in a living room, with musicians facing each other in a circle, or if there was an audience, the circle would open up to them. Similar thing with folk musicians getting together for a party-like session, or a flamenco fiesta or juerga. Balkan brass bands don't traditionally play on a stage, they interact with the audience, surrounding the audience members.

Yes, I think Blu has many possibilities, maybe not for the ghetto-blaster crowd, but for the audiophiles.
